    1. [(ENG-LEIGH)] Pie Eaters
    2. Thomas Kelly
    3. Hi Jim If you were born in Westleigh in local dialect you are a Westleyther, to be a Cowhead in local dialect a keawyed you must have been born in westhoughton the Kaewyeds seem to be quite proud of the legend, on the A6 Road that runs through westhoughton at Wingates there is a plaque on the wall with a cows head on it and the white Lion pub used to have a painting on the wall of a farmer with a saw and a cow with its head fast in the gate also the Red Lion pub used to have a room divider made up of a farm gate a cows head and a saw. The name Pie Eater is what people from Leigh call people from Wigan, this derives from the time that the Wigan and Leigh Miners came out on strike for better pay and conditions and after the suffering brought about by the strike the Wigan miners went back to work without gaining any improvement in their pay or conditions so the Leigh miners called the Wigan miners Pie Eaters because they eat Humble Pie. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    3. When i moved the 10 miles or so from Bolton (I`m a Bowtner, apparently) i remember a magazine called Leyth,Bent and Bongs. This catered for the areas of Leigh,Atherton and Tyldesley and regularly contained hatchet jobs on the town of wigan. At the risk of upsetting other listers,i couldn`t understand a word of it! Having lived in Leigh since 1979 i am now fully conversant in Leyth and have been conditioned with a healthy disregard for anything wiggin! 1. [(ENG-LEIGH)] Re: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Re: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Identity Crisis!!!!
    2. Dave, This thread could go on forever, but as you have explained to our world listers, perhaps I can attempt to explain a little more. Leyther (person born in Leigh) is from the dialect, the way we say Leigh is Leyth. Cowyed (or Keawyed) is just the way we say Cow Head, here in Westhoughton, and as I am a Cowyed or these days we like to be called Howfeners (Howfen is our way of saying Westhoughton)....perhaps we have gone up-market a bit! (he-he!) Pie-eaters (Wigan folk) - got to say that our Belgian friend always makes a bee-line for the wonderful meat & potato pies made in Wigan. I hesitate to go on.....but where do "PETTY DOOR BANGERS" come from? Pam Clarke in Westhoughton Benters (Atherton folk from the area of Chowbent) yes, I agree, we need some more info. on this. Bongser (Tyldesley folk, is this from Tydesley Banks?) All I do know is that they sold wonderful BONGS Toffee!

    3. Hi Gram, <Hi Margaret, Cowheads are from Westhoughton,Pie eaters from wigan. As you lived in Tyldesley for 5 years are you a naturalized Bongser ? Gram McGlynn> Thanks for the explanation. I suppose I was a Bongser when I lived there but as we then moved to Reddish near Stockport for 8 years and have been in Preston for 17 years I am not sure what I am really! Whatever, I consider myself a Lancashire lass as Swinton was still Lancashire in 1951. (There, that gives my age away!) Margaret North.

TYLDESLEY = Bonger (and this?) My Dad was born in Piercebridge, just outside of Darlington in the NE of England and he was a Geordie. DAVE
