Hi Valerie, I got a quick reply from Barry Mills at Bolton Metro. He was very kind and found me a family in Bolton that owned grocers, not sure if they're mine but keeping the information just in case! He also sent me some other contacts I could e-mail. Thank you for your time and help Valerie. Hi Linda I have an Alice Boydell who married my grandma's brother Richard Mather in Leigh. I believe they ran the Royal Oak in King St Leigh during the 1920s/30s Any connection? Chris Nuttall
Dear Linda: I am looking for information about Joshua Boydell, born about 1832 in Leigh. The information I have is that his parents were William Boydell and Elizabeth Battersby Boydell He emigrated to Yorkville, Racine County, Wisconsin in 1848 with his three cousins, Joshua Collier, Joseph Collier, and Thomas Birchall. There is FHL film record of parish christening for Joshua Boydell, christened 14 December 1833 at St. Mary-the-Virgin, Leigh, Lancashire, parents William and Elizabeth Boydell. My interest, and connection, is that my g-g-grandfather was Joseph Collier, son of Peter and Betty RATLIFF Collier, also christened at 13 October 1832 at St. Mary-the-Virgin Church, Leigh, Lancashire. And Joshua Boydell and Joseph Collier emigrated together. It appears that they were the only ones from their immediate families ever to do so. Joseph Collier made a return trip to Lancashire in 1907 just before his death - - but little is known other than he returned to visit family. No one is quite certain how Joshua Boydell fits into the Collier family - - and there appear to be no US researchers looking for him - - so I guess I am doing so! Also, I just found that I can buy a used copy of the book mentioned, A Line to Ellen - - and I am in the process of doing so. Any help will be appreciated Patricia (Pat) Ash Seattle, Washington USA ----- Original Message ----- From: "Curry, Linda" <l.j.curry@bham.ac.uk> To: <ENG-LAN-LEIGH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 1:20 AM Subject: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Boydells > I am a Boydell descendent from the Leigh branch of the family and, along > with Mick Boydell from the Clifton Campville side, am trying to organise a > Boydell get together in Grappenhall village the weekend of 20/21 September. > If there are any Boydells out there who have not had this message and are > interested in attending, please let me know. > > I have also recently inherited a large amount of Boydell tree research. Hi Linda, I am a Leigh Boydell descendant. My ggggrandfather was David Boydell of Pennington and Tyldesley. How are you connected? If I have any queries I will send them to you. I have purchased Barbara Treacy's book "A LINE TO ELLEN", all about the Boydells. I suppose you know about it already. I have also been in touch with John Hesford of Leigh. He is doing a lot of research into the Boydells, and he is on location so to speak. I am sorry I cannot attend your get together, because of the distance involved. I was in Leigh in 2001 doing some research, but there is never enough time. I still have relatives in the area. Well I hope you have a great time and I will think about you all. Yours, Bernie Davies, Ottawa, Canada. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Curry, Linda" <l.j.curry@bham.ac.uk> To: <ENG-LAN-LEIGH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 4:20 AM Subject: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Boydells > I am a Boydell descendent from the Leigh branch of the family and, along > with Mick Boydell from the Clifton Campville side, am trying to organise a > Boydell get together in Grappenhall village the weekend of 20/21 September. > If there are any Boydells out there who have not had this message and are > interested in attending, please let me know. > > I have also recently inherited a large amount of Boydell tree research. I am a Boydell descendent from the Leigh branch of the family and, along with Mick Boydell from the Clifton Campville side, am trying to organise a Boydell get together in Grappenhall village the weekend of 20/21 September. If there are any Boydells out there who have not had this message and are interested in attending, please let me know. I have also recently inherited a large amount of Boydell tree research. If anyone wants any Boydells looking up in my data, I'll do my best to oblige. Linda Curry in sunny Birmingham (UK)

Hi Mark & Janet, I was very interested to read your message. Was ROBERT MCMASTER related to a SAM MCMASTER of Plank Lane? I have checked on the 1881 and found a MCMASTER family living in Prescot, with two sons, one ROBERT MCMASTER aged 12, the other SAMUEL MCMASTER aged 1 year. Have also found an Edith ECCLESTON aged 7 living in St. Helens. On the 1901 ROBERT was living at the Pigeon Inn, Westleigh, with his wife EDITH. SAMUEL was living in Abram. I couldn't look at his full details as my voucher ran out! The point I am making is that my mother tells me that she lived next door but one to a SAM and EDITH MCMASTER (maiden name ECCLESTON). She was always called EDITH EMMA and lived with her mother until her marriage to SAM. He then moved into the family home at No. 136 Plank Lane. I hope you can make sense of this, as what my mother tells me doesn't square with the census, yet she is quite certain that it was SAM who was married to EDITH. (I must add that my mother is 97 with a very good memory!). Valerie

Jim, I believe that there are quite a few photographic books of Leigh and its surroundings available. You would be better served asking some of our local members to help locate them as I live just south of you in Kentucky. DAVE
Hey Dave! Really enjoyed the Leigh Website! I found the "Market" photos most interesting. My Mother told me stories about "going to market" when she lived in Westleigh. Would this Market have been in walking distance of Westleigh? The story was the whole family(Grandmother and her seven children) would walk, some distance, to market, but ride home with their purchases on some type of a tram. This would have been in the 1900-1910 era. Is the book with the old pictures of Leigh available to purchase? Keep up the great work. Was hoping someone out there might have access to the city directories of Bolton in the 50's? I am trying to trace the family of a GLADYS (MORRIS) MORGAN. Born in Leigh, unkown dates, maybe 1908 - 1916? The family was last known to be living in Bolton in the 1950's, husband's name Harold Morgan. I don't know the area they lived in, just that it was Bolton. Also I think they owned some kind of grocery store. GLADYS' parents were Samuel Morris and Alice Fairclough. Also, GLADYS and Harold had a daughter named Joyce, other children also, I only know of this one's name. Thank you for reading my msg. Sonia Hamilton, Ontario Canada
