Gill and Thomas, Thanks to the both of you, I now have a little more flesh on the bones, so to speak. Of the stories my Mother told me when she lived in Westleigh 1900-1910, was the weekly trip to the "Market". This was the highlight of the week for the older children. Fresh fish and shellfish was one of staples of their diet. Is it possible that "Fish Lill" would have been selling fish that far back? Its stories like this that really fills out family history.. Thank you both . JIM
Hi Mark & Janet, Hope you read my message I sent yesterday, as I inadvertently addressed it to Pamela! I think I've cracked the puzzle of Edith ECCLESTON who was married to two different MCMASTERS. I have found another Eccleston family on the 1881 living at 183 Firs Lane, Westleigh, but so far have found nothing to indicate they were related to your Ecclestons. The head of this family was Henry ECCLESTON, aged 35, born West Leigh. The 1901 shows an Edith ECCLESTON aged 19, cotton weaver, born West Leigh. I feel sure that Edith ECCLESTON was Henry's daughter, and that it was this Edith who married Sam. I feel sure that these two Eccleston families were related (Henry and Isaac brothers maybe?). If you find out anything more let me know. Sam and Edith were childless, but they did adopt a girl FRANCES when she was 6 years old. Frances was friendly with the Nicholson girls (my mother's family), and mum has a group photograph taken in the 1920's outside 140 Plank Lane, that Frances is on. Sadly, she died about 6 years ago. There is another twist to this tale. Arthur Eccleston, Edith Emma's brother married a BROMILOW, and became the uncle by marriage of my uncle STANLEY BROMILOW. In 1914 Sam McMaster and Ned BROMILOW, Stanley's father, formed a clog dancing group called The Eight Mites, of which my mother was one. Amongst other places, they used to perform in cinemas during the interval in the days of silent films. I read recently of a McMaster who used to cycle over from Hindley to teach Morris Dancing in the Plank Lane area, but don't know if there is any relation. My cousin Jennifer BROMILOW, Stanley's daughter, has a photograph of Plank Lane Rugby Team 1905/6. It was taken by a Leigh photographer, and Jennifer has been trying to find out more about it without success. She thinks that her great grandfather JOHN BROMILOW is one of the officials on the photograph. I don't know if there is a link here between Plank Lane and Leigh Rugby Club, but I could send it to you if you like. How old is Ben? It seems incredible that he is still alive. Mum has no recollection of him. She left Leigh in the 1930's when she got married. Valerie> > ==== ENG-LAN-LEIGH Mailing List ==== > Our list covers the following towns: Leigh (inc. Dear Gill and Jim I hope I am not sticking my nose in but the lady in question was always known as Fish Lill and she had a permanent stall on Leigh market for as long as I can remember, it was at the church end of Back Salford alongside the end wall of the Bluebell pub which faced the side of St, Mary's Parish church. The Tram's used to run until about 1934 then the trolley buses took their place. I did not see the original message so I don't know what information you required, I hope I have not got hold of the wrong end of the stick. Cheers Tom.
Hi Gill I think the fish lady was Lil Green, my Gran used to drag me to her stall every time I visited Leigh. I saw the post about the ECCLESTONs. I have ECCLESTONS in my ancestry tree. Thomas ECCLESTON c 1793 married a Sarah from Halifax. In 1841 they were living in Manchester and had 7 children - Harriet, Susannah, Israel, Walter, George, Percy and Thomas. My interest is int he Israel connection, although I would be interested to hear form anyone with connextions to any of the other Ecclestons. regards, Ann01-Aug-03 4:40:37 AM, "Valerie @ ntlworld.com" <v.lirakis@ntlworld.com> wrote: >Pamela, > >Yes, I did get it and was about to reply. Yes, she was known as "Fish Lil" I think "Pot Roberts" was a wholesaler, pots and pans as you say but also vegetables and other things. He used to have warehouse alongside the canal on Twist Lane. My gr grandfather, John Mort Hurst, was a penny farthing cyclist - presumably belonged to a local club in Leigh in the late 1800s. He won a race on the Isle of Wight for which he was presented with a clock in the shape of a ship (all in gilt and wood, made in France - very impressive thing apparently). I am trying to find out more about the clubs and this particular race. If anyone has any leads, I would be grateful. Linda
Hi, Pamela, Must have had a rush of blood yesterday and sent my reply to you instead of Mark and Janet! Thanks for replying anyway. It would seem to add weight to my assumption that HENRY MCMASTER was related to ISAAC. To Mark & Janet, I will be replying at more length on this soon. Dear Pat I've looked back on the message board and found Joyce's respond. I don't remember seeing it before. I'll have to go through the Boydell ledgers and see what I can come up with. At a quick glance, the USA emigrant list contains a Joshua Boydell (no date) who has been coded up as a William of Pennington descendent (my line). So, I'll see if I can find his parents. That should help get the link to the Colliers etc. The 1881 census shows shows a market gardener on Aspull Common (in Pennington, Leigh) Thomas Collier (aged 51), living with his wife Mary, and their nephew Simeon Boydell (aged 20, a pavior). So, there were links. The Hurst/Mort business is funny. My great grandfather was John Mort Hurst - his father James Hurst and his mother Mary Mort, hence the middle Mort. Their farm was called Two Cops, Leigh. Mary's father was Samuel Mort, who I believe was a farmer round Worsley/Atherton/Tyldesley. So, they probably are related. My John Mort Hurst married Elizabeth Boydell, the daughter of William Boydell the iron founder. Anyway, I'll see what l can find out about the Joshua link into the line. Linda -----Original Message----- From: Pat Ash [mailto:lpash@msn.com] Sent: 30 July 2003 17:11 To: Curry, Linda Subject: Re: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Re: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Boydells Dear Linda: Sometime back I replied to an Ancestry.com posting by a Joyce Howarth regarding Boydell. She was posting in response to your query. This morning I went back and looked at that information again. Your Ancestry.com post was dated 21 May 2000. And, I think that our Boydell information may connect somehow. Joshua Boydell did emigrate with his cousins, Joshua Collier, and Joseph Collier, and Thomas Birchall in 1848. Joshua Boydell married Avis Hamlin in 1852 in Racine, Wisconsin. They had three sons, Jesse (1856), Albert (1858) and Edward (1869) Boydell. In your Ancestry.com posting you also had listed the surnames of MORT and HURST. Joshua Collier (of the above) married Alice HURST, who was the daughter of George HURST and Alice MORT Hurst. Alice HURST Collier was born Tyldesley, Lancashire. Her father, George Hurst, was born 17 August 1792 and Alice MORT Hurst was born 1793, both in Lancashire. They were married 20 November 1814, Church of England, Parish Church of Wigan. Both George and Alice MORT Hurst also emigrated to Yorkville, Racine, Wisconsin - - and are buried in Sylvania Cemetery there. There is a website titled "The Mort Family in England and America" at: http://www.lafuente.net/mort/ While I have not been able to connect Alice MORT Hurst to this family - - I am quite sure that she was related as they also came to Yorkville, Racine, Wisconsin at the same time. Joshua Collier and Thomas Birchall were associated with the Yorkville community for a goodly number of years. However, "my" Joseph Collier and Joshua Boydell struck out for other places. Joseph Collier moved to Champaign County, Illinois and Joshua Boydell moved to Chicago, Illinois. Joshua Boydell was a mason and contractor in all the various census that I have tracked him through. Interestingly, Joyce Howard who replied to your Ancestry.com post - - the HOWARTH name also became associated with the Yorkville, Racine, Wisconsin community at the same time. There is also on line a book titled Sylvania Cemetery, Yorkville Township, Racine, Wisconsin - - Exploring Family Ties at: http://www.jansdigs.com/Racine/Sylvania.html While this is a cemetery record - - it is also really a record of many who emigrated from Leigh to that area - - all at the same time period. Hope some of this may help - - and not confuse. Thanks for your help. Hi Linda Richard Mather was born 1878 in Atherton. He married Sarah Alice Boydell. (my mistake, sorry). Chris
Hi Jim Certainly very walkable from Westleigh to the Market. My mother remembers "Pot Roberts" who used to sell crockery and I cant remember the name of the fish lady. I well remember the trolley buses going up Leigh Road to Atherton but that was in the mid 50's not earlier. Hope you are in the pink Cheers Gill Hamilton in Southport

Pamela, Yes, I did get it and was about to reply. I think I have solved the mystery of Edith Eccleston. Your Edith, and Sam's wife were two different people, but I suspect they were related (cousins?). I have found another Eccleston family on the 1881 living at 183 Firs Lane, Westleigh, which is very near Plank Lane. HENRY ECCLESTON 35, Coal Miner, Born Westleigh MARY E ECCLESTON Wife, aged 30, born Manchester with children Ann, 7, James, 6, Alice 4, Martha 2 and Richard Eccleston 3 months, all born in Westleigh. On the 1901 there is an EDITH ECCLESTON, aged 19 born Westleigh, Cotton Spinner. I haven't been able to check the full details, but guess that she is Henry's daughter. Do you know if Isaac Eccleston had a younger brother called Henry? Pamela, I guess I missed the boat for your trip to Leigh library - hope you weren't too in-undated. Anyway, I have HIGHAM interests in Leigh and would be interested in any information you are able to give me. This is what I have (not much I know!) - Jane Higham (b. 1804/1805 Leigh). She was christened in Atherton, Leigh on 2 Mar 1805) Her parents were John & Martha Higham. I'd like to know Jane's DOB and when and where her parents were married. Also about any brothers or sisters that she had. Hi Valerie, I was shocked when you asked if Robert Mcmaster was related to Sam Mcmaster of Plank Lane. After checking my notes, it seems that Sam is Roberts younger brother. I do show the same info on the 1881 census. On the 1891 census the Mcmasters are living on 210 Plank lane and the Eccleston family is at 246 Plank lane, in Abram. My grandmother was Fannie Mcmaster, possibly spelt Fanny. She was born in Leigh on 28 March 1902, mother was Edith Eccleston Mcmaster, father Robert Mcmaster. They Came to the US in 1904 or 1905 a couple years after Fannie was born. I was told that Robert Mcmaster played for the Leigh rugby team in around 1890. Ben Mcmaster is the younger brother of Robert and Sam, and is still living in the Leigh area. Maybe your mother knows him. If you have any info on how i can get marrage and birth records for the Leigh area, or if any one has info on the 1890ish rugby team, would love to get a copy of his team photo. Thank you so much for all your help. I forwarded a copy of your reply to my father, Leo McGoff, who is Fannie Mcmasters son. He was thrilled. Again many thanks from: Mark, Janet and my dad, Leo Mcgoff
