Hi there! At last! My new RootsWeb mailing list for Newton-Le-Willows (aka Newton-In-Makerfield) has been set up: You can subscribe to the list in email mode by sending a message to ENG-LAN-NEWTON-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. Thanks Heather. How were you able to discern which bride and groom went together? I have more Clubb brides but all have numerous grooms and I cannot figure out how to tell which one goes with which??? Kay
Hello, I'm researching the HULME family of Leigh. James HULME (HOLME) moved from Bolton-le-Moors to Leigh in the mid 1700's. My particular branch of the family then remained in Leigh until 1912, though I also have information on many of the other branches that spread around the world. Some of the Leigh families that married into my HULMEs are: EDGERLEY PERCIVAL YARWOOD BROOKS GREEN MARTIN GASKELL HIGSON PRESCOTT HOUGHTON HUNTER HURST I would be pleased to hear from anyone who thinks they may have a connection. _________________________ malcolm@gulberwick.com Shetland Islands
I have a number of Clubb relatives whose marriages were registered in Leigh although they lived in Parr, Golbourne and other areas. Specifically Margaret Clubb b. 1867 in Parr whose marriage registry entry is Dec 1886 8c 286 in Leigh and I think she married Daniel Hope but there is also a James Postlethwaite with the same registration number. Without sending for a number of certificates is there any way to find out for sure which one she married? There was also Lassey Clubb b. 1877, Sarah b. 1863. Any help gratefully appreciated. Kay
Yes Vicki is my cousin, her father is my dads younger brother. Thanks! We both are looking in all areas. Paul Fletcher
Hi everyone. I've just joined this list and am looking forward to hearing about the Leigh area of Lancashire and hopefully getting some help tracing my ancestors. A lot of my "Part" family were born in and around Leigh, some at Astley and some at Atherton. Can any tell me are Astley and Atherton covered within this list or should I look elsewhere? As to my Leigh relatives, would love to connect up with anyone researching "Part" in this area. Also trying to find details of a marriage that took place in 1785 in Leigh - Samuel Part to Ann Richardson. I have hit a brick wall in relation to one of their children who were all born in Atherton. Could anyone do a look up for me on Samuel & Ann with confirming details of their marriage, their individual parishes (could be both from Leigh) and any witnesses to the marriage. With thanks, Fran NSW Australia
Hi Paul, Just browsing through my Westhoughton file and I see that Victoria Fletcher Smith in Illinois, is also researching Fletcher & Hodkinson. Have you been in touch with her? The messages were way back in 1998. Best of Luck with your researches Pam Clarke in Westhoughton.
I am researching the following names - HIGHAM : Lymm (Cheshire), Leigh (Lancs) I would be pleased to hear from anyone with similar interests. Tim
I too have family photos taken there - women and children for the miners coming to NZ on their own. Then some years later after they had returned photos of the whole family emmigrating to NZ to leave behind for the older generation staying. Were plates/record etc of this firm kept/deposited somewhere? Gavin Yates, in Christchurch, New Zealand. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hi guys, A favour is needed and I know that some of you can help me. I have just found information regarding my family and need lookups in either the 1891 or 1901 Census (or both). If anyone can help me please contact me offlist as my area of need is in the north east and not conducive to this listing area. Thanks in anticipation. DAVE
Jim, Would you like to electronically donate your photos to our Leigh webpage? If so, you can send the scanned images to this e-mail address. Thanks. DAVE
Hi Listers, I have TWO family photos. One of my Mother taken about 1902 at DEVEREUX'S on Leigh Rd, Leigh. The second one is of my G Grandfather James Isherwood and his second wife Fanny Lomas. Their picture was much larger, but was trimmed to fit an oval frame. In the trimming the name of the studio was lost. HOWEVER, one of the props was a piece of rustic lattice work. It is in both pictures!!!! So both pictures were taken in the same studio.. I guess the question is: Does Devereux's still exist? If not, does anyone know if their files of negatives or records still exist? TIA JIM in Ohio

It became Davies's coach and funeral business. Cheers Gill Hamilton
Hi Sorry to disagree but there was indeed a Jerry Street in Westleigh. It was off Nel Pan Lane, parallel to and just south of Westleigh Lane. It is on the first edition OS 25 inch map published in the mid 1890s and still on my street map of Leigh ca. 1950! Has anyone come accross a Martha Topping (born 12 April 1839) or a Richard Topping (born about 1828 to 1831), they lived at 8 Chapel Walk, Pennington on the 1881 census but what happened to tem after that, any ideas ? Keith
Hi Pat and David, There is/was a Jerry St in Westleigh, but I think it had a name change to Northwell St. This was after most of the row houses were torn down. I am not sure when this occurred. My gg grandfather JEREMIAH ALDRED was suppose to have built and owned the houses on the street and it was named after him. My Mother was living there (as a child) in 1910 when her parents "packed up" and came to America. I was hoping to put a little flesh on the bone with anything in the directory. Thanks again. Hi Jim, There is not Jerry Street listed in either Westleigh or Leigh. However under the heading "Beersellers" there is a James Isherwood at 106 Twist Lane, Leigh. Unfortunately the name of the pub is not given. I looked up pubs on Twist Lane in another book, but because there are a number of pubs on Twist Lane I could not identify which stood at 106. I do not live in Leigh now, but I do not remember there being a Jerry Street, I do remember a Jury Street. Also there was/is a Isherwood Street, however it was not built in1885, because it is not in the Bedford-Leigh Directory. I hope this is of help. Regards, Pat.
Thanks Keith for the info you sent on the Battersby's. I will keep the info and see if I can make a connection. Gwen
