Hi there I am new to the list and searching for any information on the names Vallance and Winder. James Vallance and his wife Mary Winder (married 19/2/1792, Leigh) are said to have moved to Barnsley, Yorkshire, via Nottingham and Worksop. They had a son named John Vallance, christened 1794, Leigh, Lancashire and another child James was born in Nottingham. Any help would be appreciated. Annette Taylor Melbourne
Hannah Bertha Harrison married Patrick O'Neill of Trafalgar St c1900 - I believe they may have had a pub in Plank Lane later. Rosehannah (Rose/Rosetta) Harrison married Alfred Wilkinson a miner c 1900 - they lived in Trafalgar Street originally then Pennington Rd where descendants may have lived uintil the 1980s. Has anyone connections with either of these, or any further info? Gavin Harrison Yates, in Christchurch, New Zealand. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hi List, I received my great grandfathers birth certificate this morning. I thought it would be the answer to my problems but it has seemed to throw up more confusion. My g grandfather was Matthew Smith born 14 November 1850 at Tyldesley. His parents are listed as Richard Smith a collier & Ruth Smith formerly Johnson. I have managed to find Matthew, his wife & children on the 1881 census, they were living at 9 Clegg Street, Tyldesley. I have been unable to find Richard & Ruth on the 1881 census, but it could be that they had died by this time. I have looked on BMD for a marriage of Richard & Ruth and have been unable to find anything. If some kind person has access to the 1861/1871 census could they possibly look up this family for me. I would also be interested in other siblings of the family. Fingers crossed Jacqui
Could someone who has the 1841 census check for a family for me in Tyldesley? James Eckersley, may be about age 31 with a son, John Eckersley, age about 7 or 8, supposed to have been born in Tyldesley according to the 1881 census That is all I know of the family at this point, and the father James may be the one who died in 1847, aged 37 per FreeBMD. Alternatively, if someone has the 1851 census or index, could you check for a John Eckersley, aged about 17/18 in Tyldesley? And any others that he might be living with... Sorry, I don't know more details of John's family; that's why I need the census look-ups! Any help would be most appreciated! Jan Valerie told you that there may be a person on the list photographing graves at St George's in Tyldesley, I'm not sure if Valerie is thinking of me or if there is another person doing a similar thing in the Tyldesley area. I am going through the burial records at Tyldesley cemetery from 1878 to 1953, creating a searchable database, also in connection with this, if someone wants me to check a specific grave for a headstone I am willing to call in and send photographs of any I find. As for Tyldesley St George's, yes the church is still there and graveyard also, only due to the burial register not quoting a grave reference the graves are not easy to find. However I've been in Leigh library today and found the burial record for Henry Sherwood of Woodfield, Atherton, buried 19 January 1876 aged 70 years. Not come across Woodfield before. I also had a look around St George's today and the only Isherwood grave I could find was for a John and James Isherwood, I'll send photographs separately. Hope this is of some help, let us know if you require anything else. Keith
I am trying to find information about my grandmother Mary Elizabeth Curren and her family.(I think she was known as Lizzie) The only info I have found is that her fathers name was George. She lived on Anderton Street, Spring Street and Back Scholes, Wigan and she was a Catholic. She was born 1889/90 in Tyldesley according to the 1901 census and lived at 19 Bank Street, Golborne. I can 't find her in the 1891 census or on the St. Catherine's Index. I have applied to Wigan for her birth Certificate but no luck there either. She had a daughter Lucy Curren before she married Thomas Fairhurst my grandfather in 1918 at the Parish Church, Ince In Makerfield and had 3 other children John born 1919, Annie born 1920 and Jessie born 1924. After Thomas Faihurst died she married John Thomas Greenall. If anybody can help or suggest where I could look next it would be much appreciated.
Jan and everyone on the Leigh List, Please ignore my previous e-mail on this subject - had another of my over-60's moments!! Didn't notice it was addressed to the Leigh List. Hi Jan, I have Ann Carney and William Mcmahon's marriage certificate and it states that Ann's father was Daniel Carney, deceased. I know that William was born in Ireland but not sure about Ann. Could be connected somewhere I suppose. Please keep me posted if you find anything more. Regards... Hi Pat I have a Catherine Carney born about 1843 who married Peter France in 1861 at Tyldesley Chapel in Leigh and she says on the marriage certificate that her father's name was Edward and he is deceased. I wonder if your Ann Carney could be a sister of my Catherine, I think my Catherine's mother is Mary (as I found both Peter and Catherine living with Mary on the 1861 census) and they (Mary and Catherine) were born in Ireland (that tells us a lot). We also have to look under both spellings of CARNEY, KEARNEY which makes it even harder. Maybe we are doing the same family. Jan in Newcastle NSW Australia
My name is Jan and I live in Australia and I would like to list the surnames I am researching. FRANCE GRADY CARNEY All from around the Westleigh, Leigh and Wigan areas. Thank you Jan
