Hi everyone, I have a problem ancestor (don't we all) James HINDLEY, who on his marriage certificate gave his father's name as William ALDRED. >From census info it would appear that he was born c1828-9 in Astley, I haven't been able to find a baptism for him & I also couldn't find him in the 1841 census, although he is shown as a groom in Bedford in the 1851. He married in St. Thomas' in Bedford on 26 August 1851, if I had been able to find him in the 1841 census I may have been able to at least find his mother's name. Does anyone know if there are any bastardy bonds etc. for Astley that may give a clue to his origin, I have tried looking for a William Aldred but there are a few around & I don't know which one could be "right" one. James gave his father's occupation as "farmer" on the marriage certificate but that could be wishful thinking for Ag Lab. Any helpful thoughts greatly appreciated. Jenny Coombes Melbourne, Australia
Hi Pat, many thanks for your suggestion. I have not been able to get the time to visit this local LDS centre, I work full time, and most times its late evening that I might get the opportunity to get on my computer and do my research. I rely on suggestions from the List members such as the address of a library that might have local census information, then contact them via mail, Kind regards Mike ----- Original Message ----- From: "John B. Hi everyone, I am new to the list and have joined specifically to seek help in some research I am doing for a friend. Part of his family originated from Leigh. Herman MASSINK was a Dutch subject and at the time of his marriage to Mildred SHOVELTON in 1912 his address was given as : 4 Charles Street, Leigh. The marriage took place in Birmingham where Mildred was working at that time. Herman's occupation was "Foreign Correspondent". I can't help wonder what he was doing in Leigh as a Foreign Correspondent ? In the 1881 census Mildred's family was stated as : Dwelling: 69 Bolton Rd Census Place: Westleigh, Lancashire, England Emanuel SHOULTON M 28 M Leigh, Lancashire, England Rel: Head Occ: Drapers Shopman Elizth. SHOULTON M 30 F Mold, Flint, Wales Rel: Wife Eleanor SHOULTON 4 F Hawarden, Flint, Wales Rel: Daur Occ: Scholar In the 1901 census they appeared at 71 The Avenue Leigh Emmanuel Shovelton,Head,M,48,M - Clothier & DraperEmployerLanc Leigh Elizabeth Shovelton,Wife,M,49, Frederick Shovelton,Son,S,19,M - Clothiers AssistantWorkerLanc Leigh Mildred Shovelton,Daughter,S,9,F If anyone has any knowledge of these families I would be very pleased to hear from them, Regards Margaret

Hi Mike , The Census for Golborne for 1841 through to 1901 have been micro-filmed and are held at the Wigan History Shop. I know some of these census have been indexed, but, I can not remember which. Mike When you say 'the past census' which do you mean? The last British census to be made available to the public is the 1901 census. This is available online - ie via the internet at www.census.pro.gov.uk The initial search is free, but you have to pay to view actual household list or enumerators pages. -----Original Message----- From: Mike Morris [mailto:morrisind@rogers.com] Sent: 29 April 2003 16:48 To: ENG-LAN-LEIGH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Census information Does anyone have an address of a local library for Golborne south west of Leigh. Linda Thanks for your welcome message. I had been wondering if the alleged Aldred name was in fact Allred. I did a quick check on Allreds in the 1901 Census and found that >85% of all Allreds in England were born/lived in Leigh-Tyldesley-Atherton and Farnworth (a not-too-distant outlier). A pretty select local name by the look of it. Peter Wood
Hi All, This is my first posting to this list. I am trying to find information on the parents of a Sarah (Sally) Tyldesley, b. 29 Oct. 1774 (Leigh), d. 03 Aug. 1829 (Leigh). She may have been illegitimate since her mother is thought to have been Ellen Tyldesley. Sarah (Sally) Tyldesley married John Yates, b. 22 Oct. 1775 (Lowton), d. before 1829. They were married in Leigh on 24 Feb. 1800 and had the following known children born or baptised on the following dates: Thomas Yates b. 02 Aug 1800 John Yates b. 19 Dec. 1801 Mary Yates b. 10 Dec. 1803 Richard Yates b. 31 Aug. 1805 Sarah Yates b. 30 Aug. 1807 Other family names in the line of decent are: Baxter, Margaret 1798 – 1860 Cockshoot, Ellen 1825 – 1882 Marsh, Mary Ellen 1857 – 1942 Marshall, Margaretta 1883 – 1967 Does anyone else share an interest in these names? Hi Peter: Welcome to the group. If you prove any Allred / Aldred connections, I'll be interested. My family has been in America since about 1700, but we have traced them back to the Allred family who was living in Lancashire. The family roots seems to go back the farthest in the Eccles Parish area (Pendleton Poole). Per church records, we can document births/deaths/marriages back to the early 1500's. However, I haven't done anything on the family in England after 1700 since I know my branch was in Pennsylvania at that time. I was born in Leigh (at The Firs) and grew up in Atherton, so I count myself as a Benter. I have lived in New Zealand for the past 36 years, but get back wom every few years and still have family living in the area. My family name doesn't come from the Leythe-Bent-Bongs area (damned if I know where it does come from actually), but my mother's side were Atherton-Tyldesley CHARLSONs, possibly with an ALDRED at great grandmother level, and Atherton HIGSONs (with a great grandmother BENTICK from Cambridgeshire). The HIGSON-BENTICK family was connected with the LEE family at Alder House in Atherton - like, Tommy Lee was the mill-owning cotton master, and my great grandfather Peter Higson was his lifelong coachman, and Elizabeth Bentick a servant at Alder House till she married Peter H. Some say my grandmother should have been called LEE, not HIGSON, but we won't go into that. Apart from trying to find out why I am called WOOD, I am trying to discover facts about my CHARLSON great grandparents. He was James Charlson, and is in both 1881 and 1901 censuses with his wife Sarah and family. The family says Sarah was an Aldred, but how do I prove it? FreeBMD hasn't come up with a marriage match in the early 1860s yet. The family also says that James Charlson might have been the corn from a bit of wild oat sowing by the Earl of Derby and a chamber maid down at Knowsley. I take this with a large pinch of salt, but it's an interesting theory. Does any one know if the aristocracy in general, and the Earls of Derby in particular, were in the habit of keeping a record of their bastards? Hi Leigh List I'm new to this list and interested in the MOULSDALE family and anyone else interested in same. I first find him in 1881 at 7 Lodge Lane, Bedford He married Dinah Groom (from Staffordshire) at St Thomas's Church, Bedford 1st Jan. 1880. He worked at the GIN PIT before the family moved to PARR, ST Helens. again to the coal Mine. His Children were Richard (b:1875)?, Mary Ann (1880), John Thomas - my G'father (1882), William (1885), Alice (1888), Minnie (1890) & Albert (1892). ? I would be grateful if SKS could do a look-up for Lodge Lane in the 1871 Census ? Also does anyone have access to the 1841, 51, 61 records which might cover the Golbourne/Leigh areas and who may be willing to locate any of my Moulsdales? Hello Folks I am new to family history research - I started last year when I retired from work. Peter Wood Rotorua New Zealand
