    3. As one of LEIGH's newer members and have had some very useful information from some of its 80 quality listers perhaps I could be excused if I recommend to those that are unaware of the LANCSGEN list which is perhaps the most active list within Rootsweb. Also, today I purchased, at 'The Wigan History Shop' the 1885 Postal Directory of Bedford - Leigh. Which also includes Astley, Atherton, Culcheth, Kenyon, Lowton, Pennington and Westleigh. 3. Hello list, I am a new member to this list Having traced my Grt Grandfather Joseph Calland to Wigan but born in Bolton 1829. His Father James Calland was born in Leigh in 1790 and his Father Thomas Calland was born in Leigh 1764. It looks like, and I hope, I will be researching in the Leigh area for quite some time. As I live in Hampshire it is not quite so easy so please bear with my questions on local knowledge. I did pay a visit to Wigan Heritage Trust last week and they were most helpful to me. Bob Howard

    3. Hello Mike, You may already have the answer by now-- yes Newton-le Willows is about two miles to the south of Golborne and I would think it is the same as Newton in the Willows. 2. Vin & Tania Fleming
    3. All list members, My Mother-in-Law's gtgt grandmother was Ellen COCKSHOOT, b. 27 March 1825 (Leigh), d. 27 Feb. 1882 (Leigh). She married Richard YATES (b. 30 April 1825, d. 11 March 1895, Leigh) on 7 Aug. 1847. They had 9 children, all known. Ellen's father was John COCKSHOOT, b. 10 Jun. 1793 (Leigh), d. 9 Nov. 1863. Her mother was Alice JUBB, b. 20 March 1796, d. 24 Dec. 1876. Ellen's grandfather (i.e. father of John) was a Thomas COCKSHEAD, b. c1750, who married Martha (Unknown), b. 1759, d. 9 Nov. 1836. They had the following children: Ann COCKSHOOT, bap. 30 April 1776, St. Mary's R.C. Church, Highfield Street, Liverpool Thomas COCKSHOOT, bap. 14 Jan. 1787, St. Mary's R.C. Church, Highfield Street, Liverpool Martha COCKSHOOT, bap. 23 Jan. 1791, St. Joseph's R.C., Leigh John COCKSHOOT, bap. 10 Jan. 1793, St. Joseph's R.C., Leigh Daniel COCKSHEAD, bap. 7 March 1795, St. Joseph's R.C., Leigh Maria COCKSHEAD, bap. 23 Jul. 1796, St. Joseph's R.C., Leigh William COCKSHED, bap. 7 April 1798, St. Joseph's R.C., Leigh Robert COCKSHUT, bap. May 1801, St. Joseph's R.C., Leigh Maria Coxshoot, bap. 16 October, Astley Chapel, Astley Daniel's parents are given as William and Martha, but this is thought to be a mistake and that Thomas was indeed his father as the children all have the same sponsors. William is known to have moved to Boothstown later on in life. WHERE WAS THIS FAMILY between the birth of Ann (1776) & Thomas (1787)? There is an 11 year gap and no reference can be found to the family in Liverpool between these dates. It is possible they were in the North of Lancashire at this time but that is only speculation. DOES ANYONE HAVE A CONNECTION WITH THESE COCKSHOOTs? If so I would like to hear from you. (Edward was the son of) David BOYDELL (weaver) who, in 1840, was at Pennington (Flash) when Edward was born.” Anyone have connections? 2. Peter Wood
    3. Hi folks I am hoping to spend a couple of weeks back in Lancashire sometime during your summer. I was thinking of taking a look for family headstones in Atherton Cemetry. Are any of you familiar with the place? If my memory is correct, it is at the side of Leigh Road not too far down from the Punch Bowl. Question is - does anyone know if there are cemetry/grave records and plans which would save a lot of time hunting? I will be looking for various family members who died between about 1895 and 1955. 3. hi again! here you go! from "JH Lane's History of Newton Le Willows" (edited) "...before and after the Norman conquest, this district was called the hundred of makerfield and Newton-In-Makerfield...also known by the more descriptive and metrical name of Newton in the Willows..." Goes on to explain a book from 1638 by Richard Brathwaite (university man, poet and drunkard) called "Drunken Barnaby's Four Journeys" and this is what he wrote of Newton: "Thence to Newton In The Willows Where being bolster'd up with pillows I at cards play'd with a girl Rose by name a dainty pearl At centy-foot I often moved Her to love me whom I loved." Further explanation says that on entering Newton from the south, this traveller would have had to cross Newton Brook nr Newton Mere in a beautiful valley of willows which would lead to Golborne Dale to the right or Dene Dam to the left! Or words to that effect! haven't seen that many willows in that area to date mind! Mike, If you will read the messages that you are referring to you will notice that the Listowner has commented on them already. You do not need worry about your being unsubbed. People can only unsub by sending an e-mail to ENG-LAN-LEIGH-L-request@rootsweb.com with the word Unsubscribe in the subject line. The Listowner (me) is subscribed under two different e-mail addresses, one from home and one from work. I can monitor the listing easily using this method. I hope that people don't get confused and think that there are multiple owners. The reason taht your address has been included id because people just reply to a message and hit send without weeding out the original message. Again, worry ye not and keep doing what you're doing.
