    3. Hi Peter. My Reneker interest is my gtgtgfr William Reneker Astley only known as William Astley on all censuses, etc. until I found his gravestone in Heywood Cemetery (1891). My paternal grandmother told me (generations ago!!) that my interest in/flair for the German language must be because an Astley ancestor had married a "Fraulein Hennicker". I searched for this name for years without finding anything and then when I found William's grave with Reneker (sounds and spelled German!) as his middle name I thought this was the connection and poss his mother's maiden name?? But I have found nothing except the Ranicar/Renacre/etc names in the Leigh area. (Wm. was born Golborne circa 1810) and one remaining Reneker, now dead, who lived in my town of Walkden, Worsley, Manchester about 10 years ago. His dau. told me that he was the last remaining Reneker in the whole UK!! so the name is now defunct. She was only able to find the Ranicars in Leigh and was unsure of a link. There are very few mentions of the name in the IGI and I also looked at the German version but found no clues (marriage to an Astley!?) there. And not knowing whereabouts in Germany this elusive Fraulein came from I can go no further. Years ago I wrote to all the German Reneker/Rennicker in that countries phone book - only a few replied; they were related to some of the others; but several did not answer. None of the ones who did had any knowledge of an ancestor going to England, so that was another blank wall. I look forward to hearing that you have found a link for me but will not "hold my breath"!! Regards, Rita. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Howard Latham" <phlatham@ntlworld.com> To: <ENG-LAN-LEIGH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 09, 2003 5:43 PM Subject: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Re: [(ENG-LEIGH)] re Battersby, Leigh. > Hi Rita > I am interested in your "Reneker". > I am working on my great-great-grandparents, she born Ann Ranicar, different > spelling but I have found various spellings within the same family! > She gave birth to my great-grandfather in Manchester in 1844 - I cannot find > other Ranicars in Manchester at that time, but plenty in the Leigh area. > There is a family of Ranicars there going back to early 16th century, but I > have been unable to link to them yet. > We may be able to assist each other. 3. Dear Rita - My connection/interest with Battersby in Leigh is pretty limited. I have a Sarah Harrison (my main family interest) born 1907 in Leigh, marrying a Frederick also born in Leigh 1907, on 4 Apr 1931 in Leigh. They do not appear to have had children. They were married in the Leigh Parish Church - Frederick's father's name was James, retired - and one of the witnesses was a John Battersby. More than that I do not have. Sarah died in Leigh in 1997 aged 91 - I haven't got Frederick's death date. That might tie in at some stage for you. I hope so. All the best with the search! 3. Hi Rita I am interested in your "Reneker". I am working on my great-great-grandparents, she born Ann Ranicar, different spelling but I have found various spellings within the same family! She gave birth to my great-grandfather in Manchester in 1844 - I cannot find other Ranicars in Manchester at that time, but plenty in the Leigh area. There is a family of Ranicars there going back to early 16th century, but I have been unable to link to them yet. We may be able to assist each other. Please let me know of your Reneker, perhaps I might find a link. 3. Hi Gill, I am researching the Calland's and I have just been to Leigh where I found the wedding, on Leigh Parish Church records, of Thomas Calland, my x 4 grandfather, who married Ellen Crompton on 17th Feb 1789, both of Bedford. I notice that they were having children at the same time as your Henry and Ellen Calland? who had about 5 between 1791-1801. If you haven't seen these they can be found on the IGI parent search using the batch No C005393 1782-1812. I have not found a birth/Christening for Thomas yet, could he be Henry's brother? I will watch out for this possibility and keep you informed of any findings. Would you be so kind as to do the same? Regards, Bob Howard in Hampshire. -------Original Message------- From: ENG-LAN-LEIGH-L@rootsweb.com Date: Thursday, June 05, 2003 08:52:56 To: ENG-LAN-LEIGH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Re: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Re: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Re: [(ENG-LEIGH)] CALLANDS Hi There Been away and am just getting through outstanding emails :>) I have CALLANDS from the Bedford area of Leigh in the shape of Henry CALLAND who I beleive was my 5x great grandfather. 2. Hi Gavin I have a maverick Martha Battersby who was adopted into the WOODWARD/NEWTON households in the Bedford area of Leigh. My father reckoned her family from around Henrietta Street though the 1871 census describes her as being born in Atherton. Have not been able to find her birth. According to the 1871 census she was born in 1863. Have you by any chance come across this lady. Cheers Gill Hamilton in Southport
