Hi Olive I did not pay too much attention to the earlier messages so when you say the Fylde books were moved to Preston earlier this year what exactly do you mean.? Will there be new data on the GRO index? I am missing a marriage between a Sarah Alice ORMONROYD and a James CROWTHER. between 1901 and 1905. I have her death certificate, but am having trouble with the marriage. Am hopefully writing to registrars all over the place. Speak to you later, have to go now. Olive
Hi Beth The books referred to are the books which are held at the Register Office. There are those for births, marriages and also for deaths. Previously all the ones covering the Fylde area were held at Blackpool Register Office, but they have been moved now to Preston. So although it may say Fylde it means that you have to apply to Preston, or Southport, as I said previously. The GRO index as it stands is still the same, but the Lancashirebmd site is where there are volunteers typing up and checking indexes at various Lancashire Register Offices. These could give more information in the index, i.e. the full name, instead of Mary J, it could say Mary Jane. If this information is in the original registers when they are checked. However, you would still have to buy a certificate to obtain the full information that is included on the certificate. No other way, except if you know the Church involved and then it is possible to access the Church record. If the folks married in the Register Office, then there is no choice but to apply for a copy of the certificate. Some towns are further advanced than others, you just have to check the site for Lancashirebmd. I hope you can understand all this. I have looked for the James Crowther marriage, but it is not on the Lancs site, so you need to check the GRO one. Sorry I cannot do this, am having to go out. Smedley Hydro will do a search for you, for a bigger fee, you can look on their site for details. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ Good luck Olive
