Hello, I've had tremendous difficulty tracking down my Gt Gt Grandfather. My uncle has discovered a photo of him in uniform, so I am assuming that he fought in WW1. I know some of his peers did. If I understand correctly, to get army records you need to know the regiment and at present I do not. Would it be that people joined/were forced to join the regiment closest to where they lived? Someone suggested I show the photo to the Lancs. Regiment Museum to see if they recognise the uniform as one of theirs or if they could identify it as any other. Is there a web site with photos or descriptions of uniforms so I could try myself? If not, what is the address for the Lancs museum? I heard that only 1/3 of WW1 records survive because they were destroyed by fire during WW2. Is this correct? If so, it seems events are conspiring to prevent me ever learning more about this man. He lived in Blackpool but possibly came from Blackburn. Do any school records survive? I think Blackpool library told me that they had none because previously no-one saw the need to preserve such information. What about Blackburn? Thanks, Stephen.
