    3. Barbara Are you sure that the barracks were in Blackpool? Have a walk round! Fleetwood Library have an article, written by H. Peters, about the Hutment Barracks. They also included some diagrams of the establishment, which show the location of the hospital, the canteen (operated by my great grandfather) and the other camp buildings. They also included a photo of the hospital. The Barracks was on the corner of Poulton Road and Cemetery Road/Lane (now Beach Road). The Queens Hotel was located across from the camp on Poulton Road. The Camp stood on 14.5 acres of land and was built in 1861 and closed at the end of 1929, at which time the Hutments and the rifle ranges were passed on to the Town. The boundary of the Camp was along Beach Road from Poulton Road to Shakespeare Road. Along Shakespeare Road to a line between what is now Borrowdale and Bramley Avenues. Along this line from Shakespeare Road to Poulton Road and then along Poulton Road back to Beach Road. The rifle ranges were next to the cemetery and bounded by Beach Road and Poulton Road. There were 3 by 900 yard firing mounds, 5 by 800 yard mounds, 3 by 750 yard mounds, 1 by 700 yard mound and a 1 by 650 yard mound. There are 2 Annie Sandersons in Freebmd under Fylde, which could match up with Fleetwood. The Squires Gate Army set up was not a barracks. I believe this was some kind of Army hospital. You can ask at Blackpool Library about this. central.library@blackpool.gov.uk Not sure when Weeton began, but the barracks are still there. Olive

    1. Lancashire Look Up Exchange
    2. Forwarded on behalf of Ailsa Barnes <ailsa@barnes.net> -------- Original Message -------- Hello Everyone, I am setting up a new Lancashire Look Up Exchange (the last one being abandoned some years ago) and would appreciate comments, suggestions and - most importantly - VOLUNTEERS! For those of you not familiar with the Look Up Exchange, it works like this... Those of us with access to Lancashire records (census returns, trade directories, parish records etc) and who are willing to help others, volunteer to do look ups within a specified arena. For example, you might be happy to look for someone in a trade directory, but not in the census returns. The new web page will show a list of volunteers together with the details of what records they are prepared to search. Those without access or who need help for some other reason, can contact the appropriate person and ask for a look up. There is no cost involved, however if a volunteer incurs a cost (i.e.. obtaining a copy of a parish record entry) then the person requesting the information would be expected to reimburse them. The Look Up Exchange has the potential to help everyone. Very few of us have access to all of the records, and all of us have needed some help with look ups at one time or another. If you are that lucky person who has everything at your disposal, then you would get a warm glow inside knowing that you have helped others! There are rules governing what a volunteer will undertake and what they can refuse to stop those kind enough to help with the project being inundated with vague requests, which would take too much time to look up. For a good example of a Look Up Exchange website, have a look at the one for Gloucestershire http://aztecrose.tripod.com/gloucestershire/index.html The Lancashire one will be very similar to this. So why use a look up exchange website when we have our lists, I hear you ask? The idea of the look up exchange is that it casts its net wider than the lists are able to do. The scope of the Look Up Exchange will cover about 25 Rootsweb lists and is also open to anyone with internet access not just list members. The look up exchange is a complement to, not a distraction from, our friendly, helpful lists. Any comments or questions would be very welcome, but OFF LIST please. The Look Up Exchange covers 25 mailing lists and I don't subscribe to them all! If you would like to volunteer your services, please drop me a line - again off list - and let me know what resources you would be prepared to use for look ups. (mailto://ailsa@barnes.net) Thanks to Lynne Klein, Paul Dixon, Colin Pratt and Phil Stringer for their help and support in setting up this project. Ailsa

    1. The National Archives to move its Family Records Centre staff and services to Kew
    2. Forwarded with permission. No further information available at this time. -------- Original Message -------- The National Archives to move its Family Records Centre staff and services to Kew The National Archives and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) today made a joint announcement about the provision of services to family historians. As part of a review of strategy, which has focused on the huge changes in information management over the last 10 years, The National Archives is announcing its intention to move its Family Records Centre (FRC) staff and services to Kew from their current location at Myddelton Street, Islington, by the end of 2008. The National Archives and ONS have for some time managed the FRC as a joint operation in Myddelton Street, Islington. Users can access historic census returns in The National Archives part of the Centre and establish basic details of births, deaths and marriages in the indexes maintained by ONS prior to ordering copies of relevant certificates. ONS has an extensive project in hand to digitise registration records and modernise other aspects of service provision, but has not yet made data and documents available online to the same extent as The National Archives. Over the coming months ONS will be reviewing its future requirements for services at FRC in the light of this project and The National Archives' plans to relocate its service to Kew. The review will be carried out in close collaboration with The National Archives to ensure that service delivery by the two organisations continues to be as closely aligned as possible. James Strachan, Director of Public Services and Marketing for The National Archives, said: "We have already made most of our material housed at the FRC available online. We remain committed to providing high-quality services to family historians, and are therefore planning to develop new online services that reflect customers' needs, and to integrate FRC onsite services at Kew during 2008. We will retain a dedicated family history service, and retain the jobs of our FRC staff in the new service at Kew." Peter Murphy, Director of Registration Services at ONS, said: "The hard copy indexes of birth, death and marriage registration, which are available at the FRC, remain for now the resource enabling the Registrar General to meet her statutory obligation to make indexes available to the public. Clearly advances in technology now permit other approaches to providing public access and that is what our review will be concentrating on. We will work closely with National Archives colleagues in conducting the review and hope to be able to reveal its main conclusions by the autumn of this year."
