    3. Does anyone know if Birling Terrace is still standing in Fleetwood? I have looked in streetmap.co.uk but cannot find one. Or perhaps it changed its name. I have an ancestor born there in 1890. Many thanks for any information. Mavis in Hyde

    3. Hi Barbara I remember Shirley`s Cycles, but forget all the names of the others and I think I have the Images of Fleetwood book. Of course, should have remembered about the rushes on the floors. Strange how something just jogs the memory. What was on the land where they have made the little garden now. The opposite corner to the Library, I presume these were old houses? Olive

    3. Hi Olive and all. I also have pictures of all 4 corners of North Albert Street taken in the 1950s/60s from the book "Images Of Fleetwood." I remember that there was a small shop next to Shirley's Cycles. It was a hat and milliners shop for many many years. From 32 North Albert Street to this small shop probably number 18, there was a gap filled with bill board hording. As for rushes, well I remember seeing the invoices for the supply of rushes for the church floor from a Whiteside dealer who supplied to the church at Poulton. On further investigation and chats with my grandparents it seems that most pubs, churches and shops had rushes on the floor which were swept up and changed every day. It was later changed to sawdust. In fact I can remember sawdust on the floor at the Co-op and Woolworths when I was a child. Also, my grandma told me that she learnt how to make rush mats and even table mats from her mother from rushes bought from a rush dealer and they also used them on the floor of the kitchen. There is an early map of Fleetwood at Fleetwood Library which also gives house numbers. So Jackie if you would like me to check the house number for you or would like copies of my pictures please e-mail me. Hope this helps. Barbara Whiteside of Fleetwood.

I have an Ann EDMONDSON whose son [?] was called Howarth, they were 48 & 5 yrs respectively in 1861. They are shown as Visitors (so no relationship is given) on the 1861 census for Low Moor, Clitheroe. Any known connections? Henry

    3. I'm trying to fine descendents of Margaret Bradley. She was born about 1865 and died in 1941. She is buried at Morecambe. Her first husband was Henry Bond. They had a son Edmund. Her second husband was Mr. Horne. She is buried in the same grave as two relatives on mine and she has the Deed of Owners Grant on the grave. I would like to erect a monument on this grave and Margaret's descendents have probably inherited the Exclusive Right of Burial. John

    1. Looking for Mr Edmundson
    2. Stephen
    3. Hello, I have just joined this list in the hope that you can help me. I'm searching in that difficult period after the 1901 census. I am trying to find my great-grandfather. Very little is known about him. He was born in 1887 in Blackburn. He lived in Blackpool, where he met my great-grandmother and had a son, my grandfather. My great-grandmother had been married previously and her first husband was assumed lost in the war. However he had not died; he had been captured. He returned out of the blue and my great-grandfather left, not knowing that my great-grandmother was pregnant with his child. My grandfather never knew his father. Where he went next is unknown. I assume he stayed in Lancashire. My grandfather assumed he had died, but this might not be true; it might just have been something they told a little boy who couldn't understand where his dad was. Until the 1911 and 1921 censuses become available I think I am stuck. I have been looking for his death certificate. His name was John Thomas Edmundson, so I am trying to look with anyone of that name whose age at death would match a birth about 1887. I have looked at 1919 to 1945 but not found anything yet. Perhaps I should look at Edmondsons and Edmunsons in case the name is spelt wrong? Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks, Stephen.

    1. Re John Thomas Edmundson.
    2. Hi I looked in Lancashire B M D and found this for the year 1946:- John Thomas Edmunson age 72 died in Sub-district of Clitheroe, Registers at Preston. This would have made him born in 1874, and would have made him around 40 at the time of WW1. Could this be your John Thomas? I have found that ages on Death certificates are not very reliable in the earlier times, for example they gave my gt granny's age as 59 when she was actually 66. I think they sometimes must have guessed at it. Good luck in your search. Jacqui Kilcoyne

    3. Hi Janet, Many thanks; this is what I was trying to remember. I felt sure that there was a way to pin it down but couldn't remember what it was. I had better make a note about it I think as my memory gets worse by the day. 3. Hi Julie, Thanks, that was my first thought but I doubted myself when I saw that the number on Hugh Wallis's site for Poulton le Fylde was P005791. I shall try St Chad's and see what that brings as I have to consult those records anyway for other events. 3. I seem to think that there is a way to find out the name of the church that the IGI Batch Number relates to, although having just been on Hugh Wallis's website I still can't work it out. Perhaps it is this heat :-). For example, I have a baptism record from the IGI for Jane FAIR, father Cuthbard FAIR on 7 Feb 1773 with the batch number C005792. Is there a way to find out which church this took place at as I would like to confirm it at Lanc's CRO tomorrow. As I have quite a long list of research questions to answer tomorrow I am hoping I can save time by going straight to the correct church records rather than trying each church till I find the correct one. 3. Hi Julie A good hint this one! I have just altered the heading so that anyone searching for either place will find this in the archives. Addresses - London St & Warren St although listed as Thornton in Fylde are both in Fleetwood. That is worth noting for anyone who needs to find an address on the census in Fleetwood, you will find them under Thornton. regards, Julie Another occasion when a bit of local knowledge is so useful. 3. Hi Jackie As Julie has found that no 20 is now the Library, then there is no point in a modern day photograph. I imagine there will be something re the site of which is now the Library. I do remember shops just around the corner, but not exactly on the corner. Rush merchant, I wonder what this is, do you think it could be that they used for thatching? There could be a lot of these around over Wyre. If Julie is still out there, I am sure she will think, like me, that London St and Warren St are the ones that are in Fleetwood. On the census as Thornton at that date. Shipwright sounds about right for Fleetwood. Olive

    3. Hi Jackie I will have a drive up to Fleetwood some time and take a look, do you have a street number? I have still to do some photographs for others on the list, but this heat wave has kept me indoors. I am hoping that during the school holidays I can "ask" my daughter to drive around and help with the pictures, in case I cannot park directly where the houses are. I am not very good at walking at the moment. For instance, if there are yellow lines or parked cars where I need to be I would be stuck. Do you have any connection with the name Cumsty in Gt Eccleston? Olive
