    1. [FYLDE] ADMIN - Slow distribution of mail
    2. Lynne
    3. Dear Listers, Don't know if/when you'll receive this, but it's worth a try to let you know that there have been problems with RootsWeb's mail servers. In addition to AOL and some other ISPs blocking RootsWeb mail, quite a lot of mail that has been sent through RootsWeb's servers has just been stuck there and has not made it to the list. The problem is particularly bad with those lists that have been migrated to the new mail program. I'm afraid that there's nothing we can do but sit and wait, fingers crossed. I'm sure everything will soon be back to normal (whatever 'normal' is!) Have a good Bank Holiday weekend! Best wishes, Lynne

    1. [FYLDE] ADMIN - AOL subscribers
    2. Lynne
    3. Dear Listers, More news about AOL and RootsWeb. Now posted at the Help Desk: > Our mail lists have run into an AOL problem that significantly delays > and/or deletes AOLer's list mail before it is delivered to their > inbox. It also could cause some AOL subscribers to bounce and be > unsubscribed from their list(s). This is happening primarily with the > lists from lists9 which has most of the mailing lists that have been > migrated to Mailman. We are doing everything we can to work with AOL > to fix this. Users should make sure all list mail that gets directed > to the spam folder is marked “This is not spam”. They should also > contact AOL directly about the delay and deletion of their list mail. > We apologize for the inconvenience. The list admin for the RootsWeb AOL support list advises that if AOL users continue to have problems, they should complain to postmaster@aol.com and state that mail from RootsWeb lists9.rootsweb.com -- IP address is 66.43.27.45 -- is not spam and that you want to receive this mail. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you! Other subscribers -- if you are answering a message from an AOL user, please CC that user when you post your response to the list to ensure that the original poster will receive your reply. Best wishes, Lynne

    1. [FYLDE] ADMIN - List changes
    2. Lynne
    3. Dear Listers, A few more notes about the changes in list management software. ~ Digest subscribers: Please remember that if you don't like the way the new digest appears, you can have it changed to something that looks more like the old digest. Just write to me privately off list and I'll be happy to make the change for you. ~ AOL subscribers: Because the change to new list administration software necessitated a change in list servers, AOL may not recognize mail from RootsWeb as being legitimate. If you find list mail in your spam folder, be sure to click the "This is not spam" link to send the messages to your Inbox. It's very important to do this to 'train' the filters and let AOL know that the new server can be trusted. AOL users may find it useful to subscribe to the list devoted to AOL users on RootsWeb. See <http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/RootsWeb_Support/AOLers-RootsWeb.html>. ~ Everyone: All of the lists are rather quiet, not unusual around this time of the year. To work out any kinks we may have on the lists, though, we need more traffic on the lists. I'd really appreciate it if as many of you as possible would post a message to the list. Tell us about your brick walls, questions about researching, or post about any other on-topic subject. If you've been on the list for a while, re-introduce yourself and tell us about your research interests. With thanks and best wishes, Lynne

    1. [FYLDE] Lancashire Look Up Exchange
    2. Ailsa Barnes
    3. Hi all, Just a quick line to let you know that the LANCASHIRE LOOK UP EXCHANGE is now up and running. You can access it directly by going to: http://www.lancs-lookup.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ or by going to: http://aztecrose.tripod.com/LookupExchange.htm and clicking on LANCASHIRE. Thank you to all who have volunteered to help with this project and to those of you that are not able to volunteer, but who have sent messages of support. I am still in need of some more volunteers. To be a volunteer you will need to have access to some Lancashire source ie, trade directories, parish records etc. You can check the site to see the type of thing and also to see what we have covered already. I have plenty of people who are happy to do census look ups and BMDs, but I need the more unusual stuff or those who are happy to go to the records offices. You can be involved as much or as little as you want to be. Offering very general look ups will result in more requests than if you offer to do look ups for one specific parish for example. If you volunteer but then find that it is taking more of your time than you imagined, just drop me a line and we can either amend what requests you will accept, limit the number or take you off the list... nothing is set in stone! Why not volunteer and give it a try! If you would like to volunteer but are concerned about having your email address publicly available, then I have a solution to that too (thanks Lynne!). Just drop me a line off list. I do hope that you find this new site helpful to you in your research. Any comments, criticisms or suggestions are all welcome... off list please. Best Regards, Ailsa Admin - Lancs. Look Up Exchange

    3. Hello again I haven't seen a reply from anyone else on the list, so hope that you will find the following of use. I've looked at Ancestry again - the image is unclear, but it looks to me like 6b 332. If you apply to the local registrar for a copy of the certificate, you don't need to quote the reference number at all. They just need to know the full name and quarter (although any additional info you can offer, such as parents' names, is welcome). Once again, the Genuki site is very helpful - http://cheshirebmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/index.html - lists all the registration districts and if you follow the one you're interested in it will give phone number for you to contact whichever registar now holds the Penkridge records. They are usually very helpful on the phone. Have you tried looking at www.ancestry.co.uk for the BMD indexes? As I am a subscriber, my computer automatically puts my password etc in, so I dont know how it works for non-members, but I've been told you can access the records and images for free. Good luck Janet C >From: stephengenuki@tinfoil.cotse.net >Reply-To: stephengenuki@tinfoil.cotse.net, eng-lan-fylde@rootsweb.com >To: Janet C <eng-lan-fylde@rootsweb.com> >Subject: Re: [FYLDE] [ENG-LAN-FYLDE] GRO index 1884 Q3 >Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2006 23:02:05 +0100 > > > I've checked the third quarter 1884 births on Ancestry, but can't see >your > > Thomas Evans. > > >Hello, > >I'm sorry for causing you inconvenience, I've made a terrible mess of >things! > >I was rushing to send the e-mail before I went to work this morning >and consequently missed out the fact that it was a birth certificate >and missed the fact that I had typed the wrong date! I was rushing to send the e-mail before I went to work this morning and consequently missed out the fact that it was a birth certificate and missed the fact that I had typed the wrong date! I'm very sorry to have sent you all looking on a wild goose chase. Thomas Evans was another relation but I am actually looking for the birth of Frederick Evans. I downloaded the image off 1837 and it is in the third quarter of 1858. I am so very sorry I gave the wrong name; I haven't got a clue where the 1884 came from! I hope to go to the library this weekend but if anyone can check before then, it is definitely Frederick and definitely 1858. I apologise again for being totally wrong in my previous e-mail! Rather that you spend your time looking for me, let me look myself. If you could tell me how to view these on ancestry I could look for things myself in the future, without having to confuse the people reading this list! Thanks, Stephen.

    3. Hi Stephen I've checked the third quarter 1884 births on Ancestry, but can't see your Thomas Evans. Genuki says that the Penkridge registration district was abolished in 1877 and succeeded by Cannock district. I can't see a Thomas Evans listed for Cannock in that quarter either. Could you confirm that it is definitely the September Quarter of 1884 you are looking at? [this from Genuki site]:- PENKRIDGE REGISTRATION DISTRICT Registration County : Staffordshire. Created : 1.7.1837. Abolished : 1.4.1877 (succeeded by Cannock district). best wishes Janet C >From: stephengenuki@tinfoil.cotse.net >Reply-To: stephengenuki@tinfoil.cotse.net, eng-lan-fylde@rootsweb.com >To: Janet C <eng-lan-fylde@rootsweb.com> >Subject: Re: [FYLDE] [ENG-LAN-FYLDE] GRO index 1884 Q3 >Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2006 19:43:25 +0100 > > > You don't say whether this is a birth, marriage or death you are looking >for > >Oops sorry! 3. Hello Stephen The GRO Indices are available on Ancestry (and I understood they were available for viewing free of charge, but may be mistaken about this, perhaps someone else will confirm). You don't say whether this is a birth, marriage or death you are looking for - I've had a quick look on Ancestry (I'm a subscriber), but can't see what you're after. Maybe someone else will be able to help. Good luck! 2. Hello, If anyone is looking at the GRO indicies please could you look at Q3 for 1884 under the name "Thomas Evans". It appears at the top of the list on 1837, so I assume it is the first entry on the microfiche. The copy I have viewed online at 1837 says "Penkridge, 6b xxx" and the number is unreadable. Can anyone see what it is? Is there a better site on the internet to view gro indices? Thanks, Stephen.

    1. ADMIN - new list management software
    2. Lynne
    3. Dear Listers, As you have read, RootsWeb is preparing to migrate all mailing lists to a new list management system. There is no action required on your part. When the list is migrated to the new software ("Mailman," which is familiar to some of you already) there will only be a few little things that may affect you: - Your current subscriptions will remain. If you are currently subscribed in Digest mode, you will continue to be subscribed to the Digest, and if you are currently subscribed in List mode, you'll continue to be subscribed in List mode, BUT (there's always a but!) you will no longer be able to receive both the Digest AND the List versions at the same e-mail address. If you are currently subscribed to both Digest and List mode with the same address, you will only continue to be subscribed to regular List delivery when the list is migrated. If you want to continue to receive messages in Digest mode, you will have to subscribe to the Digest with a different address. (If you want to be subbed in both modes, but don't have an alternate e-mail address, I'll be happy to send you an invitation to Google mail. Just contact me off list.) - You can choose to drop the “-L” in the list email address when sending messages to the list. That means messages sent to ENG-LAN-FYLDE@rootsweb.com will be sent directly to the list. Sending a message to ENG-LAN-FYLDE-L@rootsweb.com <mailto:Eng-Manchester-L@rootsweb.com> will also continue to work. - You can unsubscribe from either List or Digest mode by sending your “unsubscribe” message to a single address: ENG-LAN-FYLDE-request@rootsweb.com. - You can use either ENG-LAN-FYLDE-L-request@rootsweb.com or ENG-LAN-FYLDE-request@rootsweb.com to subscribe to the regular List delivery. To subscribe to Digest, continue to send your “subscribe” email to ENG-LAN-FYLDE-D-request@rootsweb.com. - The “from” email within the expanded message headers will be different (no “-L”). This may result in some list messages being captured by your “junk” folder and you may need to edit any message filtering system you now use. - The biggest change is to the Digest -- the Digest layout, volume and issue numbers will change. The first digest you receive once the migration is complete will be in plain text. If you don't like the way the digest looks and want it to revert to something close to the old format, please contact me privately off list and I'll tweak a setting for you. Easy peasy. ;-) The Manchester list participated in beta testing of the new list management software and lived to tell about it. <g> If you're also a subscriber to that list, you know that the impact of the change was minimal. I don't know exactly when the list will be changed to the new system, but expect it to happen within the next 24 hours. Watch this space! With thanks and best wishes, Lynne
