Once I figure how to post a copy on to the internet, I'll let you all have a look. I have been told that the original (I only have a scan) says on the back: Rfm Edmundson No. 3323 A Co 5 KLR So can anyone tell me what this might mean. I have my own "translation" but I'd like confirmation from the list. Thanks, Stephen.

    3. I am seeking help in search for death and burial of my forbear Arthur BENISTON (aka) BENNISTON . He was born in Nottingham June 1849, married to Louisa Grimley in Ilkeston Derbyshire 16 April 1872 and was involved in the framework knitting industry mainly for most of his working life. This included a spell as manager of a hosiery factory in the Bangalore dristict of India where three of his children were born between 1879 and 1884. He married his third wife Ida Elizabeth Raynor PILLING at St Paul`s Church Marton Blackpool on 24 April 1923. She died in Victoria Hospital 4 February 1834. Her death certificate states that the death was due to accidental pulmonery embolism through slipping in Station Road South Shore Blackpool on 14 January 1934. At the time they were living at Thames Road Blackpool. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who may have knowledge of this individual. Thanks Arthur Beniston

    2. > I do not know if there is a website to help identify regiments, but there > are books that could help, I saw one that particularly mentioned cap badges. Hello again, After reading your reply I searched for cap badges using google. I found this site: http://www.militarybadges.org.uk I could not get the pages to load with Netscape but it will load with Internet Explorer. I'm really confused! There are three badges which look identical and look like the one in my photo. They are: The West Yorkshire Regiment http://www.militarybadges.org.uk/badges/infan3.htm The King's Regiment (Liverpool) (1927-1950) http://www.militarybadges.org.uk/badges/infan9.htm and The 3rd (King's Own) Hussars (1920-1958) http://www.militarybadges.org.uk/badges/cava1.htm Why do three regiments share the same badge? Two of these have dates after WW1. There is no date on the photo so I don't know when it was taken. Perhaps this was taken some time after WW1? Can anyone help with this? Is their a military list I should subscribe to? Actually that reminds me, I received two copies of your e-mail; sent to ENG-LAN-FYLDE-L@rootsweb.com and eng-lan-fylde@rootsweb.com Are these separate groups? If so, what is the difference? I have joined groups for other counties that I have found ancestors in and I notice some of these groups end in "-L" whilst others do not; what does the "L" signify? Thanks, Stephen.

    2. > I do not know if there is a website to help identify regiments, but there > are books that could help, I saw one that particularly mentioned cap badges. Thanks for the replies. I've never used a blog before. I'll have to look into it. The picture is not in tip-top condition; as you would expect for its age. The cap badge looks like it might be a horse? Does that ring any bells with anyone? I looked at the WW1 medals at the National Archives. Just to clarify is it that all the medal records are complete and its only the soldiers full records that were destroyed by fire? I think I read there that any soldier that set foot abroad received a medal, so would it be that more or less everyone in WW1 got a medal and therefore a record exists of some sort? Presumably only those who never left UK shores did not receive a medal? I did find two people with the right name: one in the East Lancs and the other in South Lancs, though there were a few others scattered in other regiments. I wonder which is my Gt-Gt-grandfather? What information is on a medal record? Thanks, Stephen.

    3. I've nothing to add to Olive's comprehensive reply, except to say that if you could put the photo on the web (on a blog site maybe, or Photosite) then direct us to the address, we could have a look at it and try to help with the identification. I've had some success doing this with many of my old photos - I've used the free Blogger site http://www.blogger.com If you want to have a look at mine to see how it works then go to http://curranconnections.blogspot.com/ Good luck! 3. Hello Stephen I do not know if there is a website to help identify regiments, but there are books that could help, I saw one that particularly mentioned cap badges. As far as I know, at the beginning of the war the men volunteered locally, but later on they often were sent to other areas to fill in vacancies in other regiments. A lot of WW1 records were lost by a bombing raid in WW2. There is an Army Museum in Preston, but this only covers certain regiments and there is the Lancs Fusiliers on in Bury. Why not try emailing the Blackpool Gazette. They have a page on Tuesday where they include requests from people searching for family contacts, such as yours. A lot of people have had success with this. Good luck Also your query re GRO. If you can find your man on Lancashirebmd then you mostly likely will find the full name including all Christian names. 1. [FYLDE] GRO Index question
    2. Hello, Is it common practice for the GRO to list initials on their index? I'm looking for a John Thomas Edmundson. There's dozens of John Edmundsons but only a few John T Edmundsons. Am I lucky; is he likely to be listed as John T. or could he be mixed listed among the dozens of John Edmundsons? Thanks, Stephen.

    1. [FYLDE] Lancashire regiments in WW1
    2. Hello, I've had tremendous difficulty tracking down my Gt Gt Grandfather. My uncle has discovered a photo of him in uniform, so I am assuming that he fought in WW1. I know some of his peers did. If I understand correctly, to get army records you need to know the regiment and at present I do not. Would it be that people joined/were forced to join the regiment closest to where they lived? Someone suggested I show the photo to the Lancs. Regiment Museum to see if they recognise the uniform as one of theirs or if they could identify it as any other. Is there a web site with photos or descriptions of uniforms so I could try myself? If not, what is the address for the Lancs museum? I heard that only 1/3 of WW1 records survive because they were destroyed by fire during WW2. Is this correct? If so, it seems events are conspiring to prevent me ever learning more about this man. He lived in Blackpool but possibly came from Blackburn. Do any school records survive? I think Blackpool library told me that they had none because previously no-one saw the need to preserve such information. What about Blackburn? Thanks, Stephen.
