Forwarded with the author's kind permission. Congratulations and thanks to all volunteers involved in UK BMD. Lynne -------- Original Message -------- Hi New data has been added to the birth indexes at www.lancashirebmd.org.uk as follows: 33,533 births for Oldham RD comprising all sub-districts (1881-1885) Thanks to Colin Wood and team for the above 25,727 births for Liverpool RD comprising Kirkdale sub-district (1882; 1907-1919) Thanks to Peter Jolliffe and team for these These additions now bring the total number of records on the site to an astonishing 5 million. This is a good point at which to thank all volunteers, past and present, who have contributed to this increasingly valuable resource. If you live in England, you may have already used the site UpMyStreet to find out what your house is worth or to see what real estate is available in your area. The site might also be helpful to those wishing to know how close a cemetery is to a particular town in England or how to get in touch with someone at the cemetery. If you know where someone died and you're trying to figure out in which cemetery that person was buried, this site could be helpful. It's particularly useful for those of us with inconsiderate relatives that insisted upon being buried in a county different to the one in which they died. ;-) See <http://www.upmystreet.com/UK/findmynearest/community/cemeteries-and-crematoria/results/in/blackpool-3944.html> or <http://tinyurl.com/2bghga> for an example of what sort of information can be displayed. Best wishes, Lynne

The oldest Church in Blackpool is the Parish Church in Bispham. Poulton le Fylde is still going strong, the early certificates have this district written on them, which is kind of confusing. You need to look at the Poulton le Fylde Historical Society website - http://www.poulton-le-fylde-hcs.co.uk/ You could just type in Google all the township names etc. Olive

Now, "Poulton Le Fylde" is a name that has cropped up in connection with the same family. Can anyone tell me more about this place? Thanks, Stephen.

Depends upon the enumerator. Could be that the house was empty for the night, or vacant and waiting for new renters to move in, or empty and awaiting demolition. Or maybe someone was at home and hiding from the enumerator. <g> >I then decided to look for the same address (Clifton Avenue, >Blackpool) in the 1891 census. See GENUKI. Also try Googling for Blackpool + history and you should find quite a bit of information, including a page written by our own Olive at http://www.btinternet.com/~stephen.yarwood/Blackpool_history.htm. There are also posts about the development of Blackpool in this list's archives (see links on the list's information page at <http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ENG/ENG-LAN-FYLDE.html>) Lynne
Hello Stephen I do not know the answer to an empty property, I wish I knew, as I have this problem in my tree. Blackpool did kind of explode, but this is only the name Blackpool. The districts had various names, Layton, Warbreck, Bispham, etc. These are still districts now, but come under the large umbrella of the name Blackpool. I hope some of this makes sense to you. Hello, Can anyone tell me the history of Blackpool? I ask this because I was looking for an address in the 1901 census. By the way, I found the address and it says "empty": does this mean that there was no-one at home that night or does it mean empty as in permanently unoccupied and vacant? I then decided to look for the same address (Clifton Avenue, Blackpool) in the 1891 census. Whereas the 1901 census has forty-odd districts for Blackpool, each with forty or more pages, in 1891 the whole town of Blackpool is covered in sixteen pages in one district! Does this mean Blackpool was a small town until the 1900s at which point it underwent massive expansion? Thanks, Stephen.

The Bracknell Family History Fair will be held Sunday, 28 January, 10 am to 5 pm, at the Sport & Leisure Centre, Bagshot Rd (A322), Bracknell RG12 9SE. There is free parking and a cafeteria. With up to 270 stalls, the fair is billed as the country's largest Sunday family history fair. The Manchster & Lancashire FHS will have a bookstall. Books covering Accrington, Blackburn, Burnley, Cheadle, Chorley, Haslingden, Helmshore, Lytham St Anne's, Manchester, Preston, Rossendale, Rivington, Standish and Wigan will be available, as well as those items mentioned on their web site. There will also be representatives from family history societies from all over the country. If you're in that area on Sunday and can attend the fair, I'm sure you'll be in for a treat! Best wishes, Lynne
Researching LLOYD or looking for links to Lytham? This site may help. And there are a few very nice pics! From Cyndi's List: >URL: http://www.lloydfamilylytham.com >TITLE: A History of Lloyds of Lytham >DESCRIPTION: A history of the Lloyd family >from Lytham, Lancashire in the UK. Ancestors >surnames include Spring and Human. Locations >include many UK counties, New Jersey and South Africa. > Best wishes, Lynne
Not for discussion on list, since there's already a list for that (see <http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Census-UK/UK-1911-CENSUS.html>. I'm sure most of you are already aware of news that has been circulating among the lists of a petition to reduce the classified period for census data from 100 years to 70 years (see <http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/CensusInfoFreed/?ref=censusinfofreed>). You may also be interested in the Federation of Family History Societies' news about the 1911 census. See <http://www.ffhs.org.uk/Societies/Latest/index.htm>. Be sure to read the entire page. Best wishes, Lynne
A hugh amount of new data has been added to LancashireBMD, both very recently and over the Christmas holiday (I was remiss in not informing you of these updates -- sorry!) If you haven't checked in a while, dash over to <www.lancashirebmd.org.uk>. Perhaps that birth, marriage, or death that you've been seeking has been added. Best wishes, Lynne
Hello again Fylde - and many thanks to Janet C for her prompt and exciting response. Wonderful - another piece of the jigsaw in place. regards Alan

Hi Alan Unless someone else has already found him for you, could you please provide further details to aid our search, as 'John Rothwell' is a very common name in Lancashire!! His age, his wife's age, places of birth, or any or the children's names/ages would be useful. Thanks Janet C >From: "Alan Booth" <alanbooth@tiscali.co.uk> >Reply-To: eng-lan-fylde@rootsweb.com >To: <ENG-LAN-FYLDE@rootsweb.com> >Subject: [FYLDE] Rothwell >Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2007 18:24:43 -0000 > >Hello Fylde, >Joined today to follow the life of John Poritt Rothwell, Veterinary Surgeon >who I believe moved to Blackpool around 1890 after having practices >previously in Lytham and Rochdale. >Could sks with access to the 1891 census kindly look for him and his wife >Betsy with several children. >Anxious to know his address and to learn if a son Thomas is with him. >many thanks >Alan Booth, Cheltenham _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live Messenger has arrived. Hello Fylde, Joined today to follow the life of John Poritt Rothwell, Veterinary Surgeon who I believe moved to Blackpool around 1890 after having practices previously in Lytham and Rochdale. Could sks with access to the 1891 census kindly look for him and his wife Betsy with several children. Anxious to know his address and to learn if a son Thomas is with him. many thanks Alan Booth, Cheltenham
Hello again, I found a medal record on the National Archives' web site for my Great(x2) Grandfather. The strange thing is he has two numbers next to his name. Why would he have two numbers? Now that I know his number(s) and regiment, etc. I am wondering whether I might be very lucky and find his records in the surviving 30% at Kew. Is there a way to find out in advance whether his records survive? I don't mind visiting the National Archives myself if they are there but it would be an expensive waste of time to go all that way and find that they were in the 70% lost to the fire. Thanks, Stephen.
