St Johns Market cleared away from Church Street and re-established in King Street. King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth visit the Fylde coast and are given a rousing reception at Lytham-St Annes and Blackpool. Freedom of Blackpool conferred on Sir Cuthbert Grundy.(see note) Visit of H.R.H. Duke of Kent. Great re-building scheme to remove Gas Works, widen Central Drive to 100ft, re-build Central Beach and set Central Railway Station back to Chapel Street ( an estimated £2.000,000) approved by Parliament. Note ;- Cuthbert and John Grundy provided the finance for the building, in 1911,(£2.000) of the new municipal library. They were responsible for many charitable acts in and around Blackpool. 3. Jackie This is brilliant. I was puzzling my brain to work out the wife of Walter de Freece, Vesta Tilley, yes that`s it. Anchorsholme and Little Bispham still flood at time, so this was money well spent? Protests against Central Beach, (Golden Mile) "an eyesore.....the happy hunting ground of cheap penny gaffs". Improvement Act contains a clause prohibiting "offensive and objectionable exhibitions of human persons". Nothing new re the above. There are constantly letters in the paper regarding the "offensive" items on view in shop windows and the eyesore of the Golden Mile. Grand National was my favourite ride. Great fire. Municipal Offices and Messrs. Boots, Corporation Street, burned down. Fireman killed. (7th October) This fire was a very bad one and there was an article in the paper not long ago. A lot of the Town Hall records were lost, some of them were the Electoral Rolls, which means there are lots of gaps in the years that are available now. Thanks for these, who on earth was Baron Stamp, sounds like something out of a Pantomime. Olive

    3. Thank you Jacqui, my Dad would have been aged 8 during these events, must have been during the Big Freeze-up that he learnt to skate, as he bought these skills with him to Oz and won many skating competitions, it always fascinated me to watch him, he tried to teach Mum, but she just ended up with bruises from head to toe. Also his family are buried at All Hallows, Bispham, wondering if photos of this cemetery are on the net ? 1. [FYLDE] Census index books
    2. olive
    3. Last Saturday I visited the AGM of the LFH&HS. In case anyone is interested there are 2 new publications of the blue books of census indexes for Lancashire. The latest volumes in the series are:- Volume 17 covers Poulton le Fylde East, Gt Hardhorn with Newton, Staining, Gt and Lit Carleton, Gt and Lit Singleton and Poulton le Fylde. Volume 18 Poulton le Fylde West includes Blackpool, Bispham with Norbreck, Layton with Warbreck, Blackpool and South Shore. http://lancashire-fhhs.org.uk/ for further details. I know a lot of people have access to Ancestry, but these little books are so reasonable, and it is quite nice to be able to sit and browse and follow the Enumerator as he walked along his route. Also at the front of each is a map which gives parish boundaries etc. Olive

    3. Hello Jackie and Peter and all. Some time ago I saw the History of Blackpool posted somewhere and I copied it all down. Since then I have added in various other dates that have appeared in the local paper and I made it into a word document. I would like to comment on the entry re Ernest Whiteside, I believe the address should be Fumblers Hill. I have to say that I have never seen anywhere such a comprehensive record of a town. In case anyone is interested in more about Blackpool I will post a list of Churches, some of which have been closed, in case there is any interest in the names and addresses of these buildings. 3. This is the beginning of a six page word document. I have the information on computer and have no idea where it all came from, I just collect all kinds of things. I started a list relating to Blackpool Churches when I began to help with the Lancashirebmd project. Opening and closing dates etc. I can send this as an attachment if anyone would like it sent that way. The first snippet is included below. I also have a list of Blackpool Churches that are included in the bmd project and this includes the date of when they ceased to worship or if the register is still open. This is in excel, so if anyone would like this list, just ask. I have a thing about lists. Here are some others. Notable RC Dates, Dates of opening of Crematoria in Lancashire, although these two are not strictly just Fylde, it could be useful information for someone.
