    3. How about writing to >The Advertiser,>Church St>Eccles>M 30 0DF >>This is the local paper >>>> Now there's a good idea. does anybody get this newspaper. My deputy and I have this strange 'hobby' of collecting the Family Announcements pages from modern day Newspapers. I started it in 1992 just collecting from my local paper, Julie blames me for getting her started in 1999 on her local ones and since then people from all over the country have been sending us envelopes filled with bits of newspapers. Julie even found a bag on her doorstep one day, donor unknown. It has got to the stage that people fetch us newspapers back from holiday instead of a stick of rock The point is that they will be a very useful index for the future, we collect all the birth, marriages and death announcements etc but only index the deceased on the computer, though we do also save other interesting titbits as well, 100th birthday photos, Golden wedding anniversaries etc. Not much of the paper left by the time we have finished with it. Yes we know we are mad and that it will not be of much use in our life time but don't you just wish somebody had done this in the 1800's. So, if anybody gets the Eccles paper and would be willing to donate the Announcement pages they would be eagerly accepted (as would any others) In Hope, Carol - List Owner (Tree Tops) FAMILY TREE & WE’LL MEET AGAIN - Free Query Service: SKY NEWS British TV Text Pages 267 & 268, http://freespace.virgin.net/tree.tops/ http://freespace.virgin.net/tt.indexes/ http://freespace.virgin.net/genealogical.collections

    3. Hi All >My deputy and I have this strange 'hobby' of collecting the Family >Announcements pages from modern day Newspapers As Carol has said this is a strange hobby.... I blame Carol completely<VBG>! >The point is that they will be a very useful index for the future..... I agree, The Indexes will be very valuable in the years to come. The information contained within an Obituary, In Memoriam or Remembrance can be a further clue of the next stage of research. An example: I have an In Memoriam that appeared in my local paper in 1999. The In Memoriam pertained to a death in 1949 regarding a member of the Armed Forces. OK, the military record is closed, but the death certificate should be avaliable and if an In Memoriam is being placed in the paper after 50 years then the chances are there was an Obituary placed in the paper in 1949, which will give further details. >......Not much of the paper left by the time we have finished with it. The Recycling chap feels very hard done by! >Yes we know we are mad and that it will not be of much use in our life time >but don't you just wish somebody had done this in the 1800's. Mad, Well, maybe just a little bit!! Once thing though, and I am sure Carol will agree, I am creating an Index for future generations, we might not have an index of papers of the past, but we can certainly leave one for the future. What a wonderful legacy for future generations.
