You can always order certificates directly by post from the General Register Office at Southport - follow this link - http://www.statistics.gov.uk/nsbase/registration/certificates.asp. You can download an application form and pay by credit card. If you know the full index reference (you may be lucky enough to find this on http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ ) the cost is 8 pounds sterling. There is a range of fees for various searches if you don't know the full reference. The big advantage with getting the certificate from Southport is that they photocopy the original. You can see the old handwriting and your ancestor's signatures, but you may find it difficult to decipher early Victorian handwriting. You can also e-mail your orders to the ONS using their e-mail address at certificate.services@ons.gov.uk. Just provide them with all of the same information as you would on the application form. Once you have provided them with your credit card information a have asked them to keep this information on file, then, with each e-mail order, you can simply request that they bill your credit card and remind them that they have my information on file. In this way, you don't have to transmit your credit card details over the Internet with every order. Also, using a credit card ensures that you receive the most favourable exchange rate available at the time. Your card is charged £8 sterling for the service and your monthly credit card statement will show you the amount you were charged in your local currency (e.g. US dollars).
