    1. [ECCLES] Edwin HOLDEN born in Eccles c1839

    3. My grandfather, Edwin HOLDEN, born in Eccles, is shown in the 1881 census as having a brokers shop or furniture dealer at 182 Liverpool Road, Barton Upon Irwell. His wife is Fanny. I should very much like to know the surname of his first wife - Fanny - as grandpa was supposed to have divorced her for misconduct. This must have been between 1881 and 1886 when he married my grandmother, Florence Louise DOBBINS and lived at 54 Ordsall Lane, Salford - another brokers-cum-secondhand shop by the sound of the description - where my father Edwin Arthur HOLDEN was born in 1889. Family anecdote says that Edwin HOLDEN had to have a special Act of Parliament for his divorce but this seems strange to me, as I believe an Act of Parliament was not necessary at that time. I was wondering whether any local newspapers might have published details of the divorce, as that must have been rather rare. Fanny, whatever her name was (I think it was TONGE) apparently ran off with the local vicar. Any help would be much appreciated. TIA Elsie Hemming
