Hi All, After over 200 years in existence, Barton Wesleyan Chapel, Barton Road, Eccles is under threat of demolition and the graveyard will be turned into a car park and memorial garden. The chapel is in a very bad state of repair. It has been vandalised and there has been a fire in the old school building that is attached to the chapel. The graveyard (front and rear) has been left to nature for many years. The front graveyard has 147 graves and has been covered over. The rear graveyard is in two connecting sections. The old graveyard immediately behind the chapel which looks to have just over 400 graves, has until recently been covered by overgrowth and household rubbish. The new graveyard joins on to the old graveyard and has 698 graves. This area is partly uncovered, but mostly covered by overgrowth and rubbish. The development of this land is for the provision of flats and car park with memorial garden. Objections against the development had to be in by the 29th November. The Planning Application can still be seen at :- http://www.salford.gov.uk/pubnotices/ and typing 43153 in the planning number search box. Because this site is in a Conservation Area, permission for this project has to be granted separately and objections have to be in for the 13th December. The Conservation Planning Application can be seen at :- http://www.salford.gov.uk/pubnotices/p041101.asp it is the second one in the list. I have not yet heard when the planning committee is to meet to discus this application. If you know something about the history of the chapel or have an ancestor buried here please let me know. A list of burials can be viewed at :- http://www.mancuniensis.btinternet.co.uk/ click on the Barton Wesleyan hyperlink. The whole site is searchable from any page, and using the search facility is the quickest way to find an ancestor. The period covered is 1804 - 1866 at the moment, but in time should extend up to 1902. Roger Hart, Little Lever, Bolton, UK. Web Site http://www.mancuniensis.btinternet.co.uk/
