Hi all, Following this message are several extracts mentioning Eccles, taken from The Manchester Guardian. Each of these extracts has a reference number on it, this is my indexing system and not part of the extract, I have left it on so that when these names eventually appear in an index on the web page, you will know by the ref. number that you have already seen them. 10 Clarendon Rd, doesn't exist anymore. The last house on this road is @ no 20. There is a large block of flats called Kemball House, where no 10 should be. Yes the houses were "rather grand" It lies between Wellington Rd and Half Edge Lane, Eccles Here is the 1881 census for this address The surrounding properties were all inhabited by affluent people Hope this helps Nora UK Dwelling: 10 Clarendon Rd Census Place: Barton Upon Irwell, Lancashire, England Source: FHL Film 1341927 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 3881 Folio 46 Page 31 Marr Age Sex Birthplace William HOWIE M 37 M Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Drugt Traveller Christina HOWIE M 27 F Scotland Rel: Wife Ann HOWIE W 71 F Scotland Rel: Mother Sarah PORTER U 22 F Brompton, Cumberland, England Rel: Servant Occ: Gen Serv
Can anyone tell me about the property at this address? I have some correspondence from 1921-1926 from the FOX family (John, wife Elizabeth/Bessie [nee ANDREWS], daughter Betty/Elizabeth[?] and daughter Jessie/Janet[?]). A 1926 letter indicates Betty would probably marry a Percy GANDY that summer and that rental homes were very difficult to find; that problem seemed to be delaying the marriage. Family legend is that Percy was with the British Foreign Service, and that might have been why they were looking for a rental rather than a house to buy. (Further, according to word-of-mouth family history, Betty and Percy ended up in Capetown, So. Africa; the implication is that he was sent there by the BFS.) A Scottish cousin and g. nephew of Bessie, visited the family in the mid 1920s (albeit as a young child of 4 or 5), but his memory is that the house was "rather grand". On one of the letters, up by the return address, there's the notation "Nr. Manchester". I suppose that indicates what end of the road the home is near? Obviously (or maybe it's not so obvious) it's the family in which I'm interested. I can't get past the proverbial brick wall on any of them! Bessie and John were surprisingly found in the 1900 census for Denver, CO, living with Bessie's recently widowed mother; they had been married less than a year and were expecting Betty (up until that sighting we would have sworn none of them had ever set foot in America!) I would guess the earliest this family unit could have resided at 10 Clarendon Road would have been 1901 (does anyone have access to the 1901 census? The 1891 census? 1881?). But at least one of the letters that were written in the twenties indicates that, while they were certainly not poverty stricken, money was tight. For that reason I wonder if John FOX had inherited the house from his parents, or initially moved in with them. And I'm anxious to learn about his family too. John FOX indicated his occupation as "chemist" on the 1900 CO census. In one of his letters he mentions a brother (without mentioning his brother's given name), and in one of Bessie's letters she mentions John's sister by the name of Kate. In the scenario that immediately comes to mind (particularly if John turns out to be the eldest son, which, if he actually did inherit the house, would only seem to be right), "John" would be his father's given name as well. In addition he might have followed in his father's footsteps in regard to occupation. Family legend is that John made a killing through his affiliation with a company that owned asbestos mines in So. Africa. After pursuing that for awhile I noticed that one of his letters was on the stationey of Ashanti Mines (Ashanti is a gold mine [as I found out from a Google search]), and is in West Africa to boot! At this point that avenue of research is more confusing than revealing. Any help, thoughts, ideas of where the key to solving the "mystery" of this family might lie would be greatly appreciated!
Hello Roger Very much enjoyed your website - had some trouble bringing the pages down, but got there eventually. A number of my families are in the Eccles area and I found the site most informative - I like plenty of background material for the areas I am researching. My lot are more likely to be Catholic than Wesleyan, but decided to have a look anyway and found some of the links did not work. Anyway, thanks for the opportunity to look. Sorry All, The "Not Found" message has been caused by a word wrap occurring, the ".htm" at the end lost its association with the URL and so the "HTTP 404 File Not Found" message. I retried from a self addressed e-mail with the same result. To bypass this problem try :- http://www.mancuniensis.btinternet.co.uk/ click on "Barton Wesleyan Chapel Burials" and you will see just below the Rose a hyperlink to the Historical Notes. My apologies, Roger Hart, Little Lever, Bolton, UK.

Hi, The following message was sent to Tree Tops by Les Hampson regarding his companys proposal for Barton Methodist Church. Please feel free to pass it around. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reference: Recent articles in the local Advertiser. I fear that they have more to do with selling newspapers than accurately informing the public. Abbotsound Ltd does not intend to exhume any remains on the above site in order to build the 32 apartments. Abbotsound Ltd has worked closely with Salford Planners and conservation officers in order to come up with a satisfactory developement which is sympathetic to the local residents and the families of the people buried there. The Company has also forwarded a copy of the proposed developement along with all existing site plans to the Home Office who based on this information do not consider that we require a licence as no remains are to be disturbed. However as there is a possibility that there maybe remains that are not marked on the documentation available the Home Office recommended that we apply for a licence anyway. Hence the 2 statutory notices on the 13th and 20th of December in the local Advertiser. Mark Iles. the reporter accepts that the headlines in the Advertiser on 3rd of January are misleading, to say the least, and arrangements have been made to rectify the situation. Anyone who has an interest or who is concerned about the proposed developement is welcome to contact:- Abbotsound Ltd, The Links Resource Centre, 21,Cromwell Rd, Eccles M30 OPX Les Hampson.

I am looking for the list that would encompass Eccleston in the County of Lancaster and County Borough of St. Helen's. Is this the correct list? Brenda Stewart Reeder
Could SKS please do a lookup in the 1901 Eccles census for FOX, John, wife Elizabeth/Bessie (nee ANDREWS), and daughter Betty/Elizabeth (age approx. 1 yr.: [birthdate July 21, 1900]). Possible address: 10 Clarendon Road, Eccles. It's also possible that they are living with his parents (whose given names unfortunately I don't know) at either the Clarendon Road address or another. By the mid 1920s they were definitely living at the Clarendon Road address (by that time a second daughter had joined them), and the house was supposed to have been rather grand; the thought that they might have inherited the home from John's parents has occurred to me. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!
Could SKS look for a JAMES HOWARTH in the Hulme area of Manchester. In 1867 his profession was an Overlocker. He had a daughter MARGARET who would have been 16 years old Many thanks Nora
***Happy New Year*** Here is the first general admin email of the year! This is being cross-posted, so apologies if you receive several copies of this! We have just started to send out a regular, monthly Admin posting as there seems to be a sudden splurge of subscribers to ALL the lists that are run between us (Carol & Julie), with many new to the internet, so, here are some basic suggestions for the newer members & reminders for the regulars **** Remember we're all living is different parts of the world and what is obvious to you not obvious to other list members. Please be patient and polite to fellow list members. Treat others as you wish to be treated. **** It is useful to indicate the State, County, Country of your research Eg: Alberta Canada, Wagga Wagga NSW Australia, Exeter Devon. If possible can the two letter abbreviations used in the USA be replaced with the full names. **** The more information you include in your question the more likely you are to get an answer and The more specific your question, the most likely you are to get answer. ****All messages posted to mailing lists are the property of their writers. Please obtain permission from all parties before forwarding or publishing any message from this list. **** "I've looked everywhere", it does helps to mention where "everywhere" is so others can point you to new places to look rather than telling you to do what you've already done. ***** Consider using the Free Family Tree and We'll Meet Again Service, provided FREE by Carol of Tree Tops http://freespace.virgin.net/tree.tops By submitting a message to the various services Carol provides, you might find that missing link. Check out the web page for further details. Remember, when you have an elusive ancestor, anything is worth a try. **** I'd like to encourage people to send replies to the LIST rather than direct to the person The advantages of sending replies to the list: there's probably others that are interested in the answer, it might get a discussion and it lets others know if the question has been answered. **** Please remember the correct procedure for unsubscribing and subscribing. Send a blank email with the word subscribe or unsubscribe in the body of the message. The address to send to is the address with the word request in it. EG treetops-news-L-request@rootsweb.com etc Please post from the address that you are subscribed under, otherwise the Rootsweb robot thinks it is spam & the posting bounces to us for forwarding. ***If you respond to an forwarded email please, please make sure that you reply to the correct address, and do not click reply to sender, otherwise Carol or I are swamped with the replies! **** Use suitable subject headings, especially if you receive the digest version of postings. Not everyone reads everything and often time dictates we skim read the subjects lines looking for something interesting or relevant. An email that says "My family research" doesn't tell us much. Another tip is to type SURNAMES in capitals, so they attract attention ****Remember ALL posts to Rootsweb mailing lists are archived, so it is always checking there. Following the links from the main Rootsweb URL, at www.rootsweb.com or from http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and then inserting the name of the list whose archives you wish to search. **** FINALLY, remember the correct List etiquette is to ask permission of the List Owner before posting messages regarding a new Mailing List you have set up or mentioning any commercial organization. Please send details to the admin address or either of us directly. ************************************************************************* To join the following MAILING LISTS just add on -L-request@rootsweb.com to the end of the Required name.
