Hi Lynda, The rule of the chapel was that each grave had to have a gravestone, but what was put on the gravestone was up to the family. Some gravestones had no inscription at all, and the majority do not account for all the burials that a grave holds. I would not like to say how many people are mentioned in the MI's but the last entry number on the burial register is 6360 and I would think there is nothing like this number in the MI's. There is another group of burials that do not fall into the above rule, and they are the common graves, where no gravestone exists. There are a lot of these, and you would think they would fill them to the brim before starting on another new grave. It is hoped to re-publish the monumental inscriptions. Because of the the re-development a full transcription is been taken. This has highlighted a number of errors both in the MI's and the burials on my web site. When the transcription has been completed I will amend the web site and re-issue the new MI's to the libraries. I hope this goes some way to explain why some of your Edwards family do not appear on the gravestones. Hope this has been helpful, Roger Hart, Little Lever, Bolton, UK. -----Original Message----- From: Lynda & Dennis Jones [mailto:lyndenjones@bigpond.com] Sent: 19 February 2002 20:30 To: ENG-LAN-ECCLES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ECCLES] Monumental Inscriptions - Barton Wesleyan Chapel

Incidentally I have the surname BRITTAIN connected to my EDWARDS line. ALICE BRITTAIN - From Patricroft ( Father - ALFRED BRITTAIN - a slater) married THOMAS EDWARDS 20 December 1890 - Eccles Parish Church. Could there be any connection to your surname BRITTAIN? By looking at the entries for Barton Wesleyan Chapel, I feel there must be a lot of names that are missing, when you compare the burials listed on Roger Hart's website. I know I didn't find three of my EDWARDS family that were on Roger's site. This film also includes other chapels. George Street Chapel, Patricroft, St. Marks, Worsley, St. George's Hulme, but I haven't started those as yet. Kind regards Lynda Jones Adelaide South Australia

Hi Carol Could you look up DAWSON in the Eccles area. I am looking in particular for Edward DAWSON b 1827 (father Joseph DAWSON). Edward married Nancy WILLIAMSON of Outwood at Prestwich in 1849 and fathered a child William in 1850. He had given his address as Patricroft, Eccles at the time of his marriage. However on the 1851 census Nancy and William are living alone at 29 Folly Lane, Worsley and I am begining to suspect that Edward had died. Any information on DAWSONs would be helpful. Hi listers I am trying to trace the the following families: John Mayo, bleacher, Father James Mayo, dyer Elizabeth Johnson , - , Father James Johnson, collier They married in the Parish Church Eccles on November 18 1838 and are both minors at this time. The place of residence given is Pendleton. According to the 1881 census, Elizabeth was born about 1821 in Salford, John had already died so I don't know where he was born. I know of 3 definite children from the marriage: Mary Ellen b 1857 Levenshulme, Eliza b 1861 Reddish, Sarah b 1862 Reddish, but assume there were others because of the gap between marriage and these births. One of the witnesses at Eliza's wedding was Edward Mayo so he is possibly another child. Does anyone connect to any of these families? Thanks Lyn Helps
