    3. I would be pleased to hear from Wroe and Worthington researchers. I have Samuel Worthington Wroe born 1810 son of Peter Wroe and Alice Worthington. Samuel has about 8 children buried at Barton Weslyan Chapel. He died at Kersal Moor in 1880 aged 70. Peter Wroe was the son of William Wroe, apparently a Silk or Cotton Manufacturer of Eccles. Alice was born to Samuel Worthington, probably a manufacturer too. I would be delighted to know more about the Wroe and Worthington families in 18th century Eccles. Bye for now, Doreen

    1. [ECCLES] INFO~ Inaugural Meeting

    3. Posted with the permission of the List Admin. Last week I wrote, that at the end of January 2002 the Anglo-Italian list was created as a discussion forum for those who are researching their Anglo-Italian Ancestry. (Anglo-Italian-L-request@rootsweb.com) and that through discussion on the list, it has become apparent that there is no formal Society available to researchers, and thus researching Anglo-Italian Ancestry can be rather isolating. It was felt that the long term aims would be to: 1. Form a Anglo-Italian Family History Society 2. To develop a web page for links and other useful bits of information. Both of these are to run along side the Anglo-Italian Mailing List and it is intended that this will be open to all those researching in this area, and it is hoped that those without Internet Access will also benefit. Over the last few days Elaine Collins and I have discussed having a meeting, and as a result Elaine has agreed to coordinate such an event. The date of the Inaugural Meeting of the Anglo-Italian Family History Society has been arranged. 3. A typewritten copy of the article from the "Salford Advertiser" dated Thursday March 14th 2002. I do not have a scanner so I have typed the article and apologise if I have made any typing errors. (I did correct a couple of glaring grammatical errors I found within the original article! ) "PLANNERS TO VISIT GRAVEYARD Planning bosses have decided to take a look for themselves before deciding the future of Barton Wesleyan Methodist Church. Salford Council's planning committee has scheduled a site visit for today (Thursday) before deciding whether to grant planning permission for a block of 32 flats and a car park on the site. Developers Abbotsound Ltd have applied to demolish the 200 year old church for the four storey building along with parts of the graveyard - known to contain over 6,500 graves. A large crowd of protestors gathered at the planning meeting at the Swinton Civic Centre last week, and many left the meeting feeling they had been 'brushed off' by the committee. But planning chairman Cllr Joe Holt said: "It is no good us sitting here and saying yes, yes, yes. I have seen it but the members of the committee have not." "In two weeks time it will come back before this committee." Barton Councillor Neville Clarke, who has protested against the development since the original planning application, added that drainage for the 32 flat development could encroach upon the graveyard despite the developers' insistence that buried remains would not be affected." Article ends. This confirms Councillor Clarke's email and also shows that the paper does seem to be at least slightly sympathetic to the cause. Unfortunately work commitments prevented me from attending the planning meeting. Cheers Sheila

Forwarded as Councillor Clarke is not on the list. -----Original Message----- From: Clarke, Councillor N <Councillor.NClarke@salford.gov.uk> To: <ENG-LAN-ECCLES-L@rootsweb.com <ENG-LAN-ECCLES-L@rootsweb.com>; ENG-MANCHESTER-L@rootsweb.com <ENG-MANCHESTER-L@rootsweb.com>; Date: 14 March, 2002 21:56 Subject: RE: Barton Wesleyan Greetings all, Don't know how many of you have met me or heard or heard of my involvement regarding the above chapel. Please read all the way down. We need some help but we also need to bring you up to speed. The council's planning committee visited the site today. The committee are made up of a cross party group of councillors and will ultimately decide on whether to accept or reject the planning application for the site. A good deal of the committee's members are with us, in that they do not want to see any disturbance of graves. It is though hard to judge exactly how many of them will vote to reject the proposal. A great deal of work has been done locally by Eric, Paul, Paul, Pat and Ronnie and a score of others. Apologies for those I haven't named and your work is greatly valued and should be highlighted by someone more knowledgeable than myself at some stage. I have no doubt that this planning application would have been passed through unnoticed without their work. I also have no doubt that their work on recovering the graveyard to a respectable condition has certainly given today's visiting party some doubts as to whether they can vote to accept the planning proposal. I would further like to add how pleased I was today to have the developer, Mr Hampson verbally attack me, describing as, "that useless lump of a councillor" and that, "clown of a councillor." He may have used other phrases and combination of those mentioned as well. This is a great testament to the work the team has done and more than goes to demonstrate that we have him riled. My only complaint is that his outburst was not heard by the visiting planning committee. I have however let advised the Director of Development Services of his behaviour, not to mention the obvious distress that this has caused me. What we need from people is knowledge: 1) If we have any building surveyors in our midst they would be most useful. We could do with an official carrying out a free survey that states the existing building is in good condition and not beyond repair. 2) Although we have made contact with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission we need to know from anyone that can tell us if there are any soldiers buried in the churchyard. 3) We need anyone that has any influence with English Heritage to put some pressure on them to respond to respond to Salford Council and ask for a 'spot notice' or anything stronger to placed on the chapel in order to halt development. 4) Please contact the magazine 'Private Eye' and in particular their section 'Nooks and Corners' regarding our plight. You can e-mail the editor at strobes@private-eye.co.uk. Do put in the subject bar that it's intended recipient is 'Nooks and Corners'. For those of you that don't know the magazine, it's a satirical publication with has a section on dodgy/questionable developments of sites which should be preserved. Their web site can be found at http://www.private-eye.co.uk/default.htm I don't think that there is anything else to say at this stage other than we are gaining some ground. The press still appear to be on our side. I've not seen this week's article but I have no reason to believe that it is unsympathetic. We've raised a lot of questions which I've insisted are answered before the application is considered again by the planning committee. This at least will delay the whole process. I will finish with a quote, although there is another if you read on, "Dead men have bequeathed a trust to us living men. Ghosts are a troublesome thing in a house or family, as we knew even before Isben taught us. There is only one way to appease a ghost. You must do the thing it asks you. The ghosts of a nation sometimes ask very big things and they must be appeased, whatever the cost" (P Pearse, 1915). Yours fraternally, Nev Clarke "It's the same each time with progress. First they ignore you, then they say you're mad, then dangerous, then there's a pause and then you can't find anyone who disagrees with you." Tony B

    3. Greetings to you all I was delighted to find this List, as it covers the area I am actively researching. I have a connection to John Burgess (b 1747), the chap who facilitated the building of Worsley, Gt Bridgewater St Walden & Barton Methodist Chapels. John Burgess’s Will (dated 1824) refers to "Eliza Pearson Isabella Pearson and Mary Pearson the three daughters of Thomas Pearson late of Manchester Cotton Merchant but supposed to have died in parts beyond the seas by Ann or Nancy Rogers otherwise Burgess his late wife deceased …which said three Daughters are now residing with Sarah Gerrard in or near to Barlow Street in Manchester" I think Ann died in 1813. According to the 1881 Census, Isabella Pearson was born around 1813 in Salford. She married John Miller in 1832, and they are my gr gr grandparents. However, despite trawling through the Eccles BTs, I am still no nearer working out my connection to John Burgess. I am in touch with Roger Hart, Eric Heaton, & Paul Hassall, and am involved in the planning battle over Barton Chapel. However, researching these folk from Suffolk is not that easy. Any information on the above families/names would be much appreciated. I am aware of the Burgess mausoleum at Barton and already have the following information on some Burgess burials : 15.11.1836 Martha Burgess, of Saml Burgess, Porter, from Manchester, aged 6 months. 13.06.1841 Lesilia Collier, sister Mrs Burgess ?, Lady, from Barton, aged 61 13.06.1847-Samuel Burgess, son of Samuel of Worsley, Gentleman, from Barton, aged 49 05.04.1848 Rosamond Ann Burgess, widow of Samuel, Gentleman, from Barton, aged 56 Regards to you all Ray Johnson Otley, Suffolk

    3. Greetings all. Am very new to family research so be gentle with me please......!!! My mothers side is Worthington from around the Denton area. Her father was James Worthington and her brother was Stanley who was a Lancaster pilot in the war. I believe James' Uncle was Fred Worthington who was Major of Denton for some time. James migrated to New Zealand where my mother and her twin sister were born. Any help to get me started would be very appreciated. Regards Scott Mennie Australia
