    2. Carol, TreeTops
    3. Hi All, Our monthly ADMIN message has been re-vamped. You will now find it on http://www.dreamwater.net/genealogy/AdminMessage.htm Please will you all go an have a look at it - comments and criticisms welcome. There are a few reasons why we have put in on a web page. 1) We do not want to clog up the Rootsweb Archives every month. 2) Those of you who are on more than one of our lists probably do not want to see it more than once. 3) You can now pop on to read it whenever you need to instead of waiting for us to send it. 1. [ECCLES] Barton Wesleyan Chapel Planning Meeting
    2. Roger Hart
    3. Hi All, BARTON WESLEYAN CHAPEL BARTON-UPON-IRWELL The City of Salford Panel Meeting for the decision on the demolition of the chapel and the construction of a car park on half of the graveyard, will be heard in the Committee Room at Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton commencing at 10:00am, 16th May 2002. English Heritage and the Manchester Archaeological Unit have visited the chapel, but no interest seems to have been taken in the graveyard. If planning permission is granted, it is expected that the chapel will be demolished almost immediately, and I expect access to the graveyard will cease while work is in progress. This could well be the last chance for you to view ancestors graves and take photo's before the old portion of the graveyard is covered by a car park. I hope that as many people as possible will attend the meeting, Roger Hart Little Lever, Bolton, UK.

    1. [ECCLES] Missing Relatives
    2. Carol Rothwell
    3. Hello listers, I have just come across an interesting site that just may hold some answers for family researchers. Below, I have copied and pasted a summary of what the site is all about, followed by just a few entries. If you are interested.....the site is http://members.ozemail.com.au/~hdharris/missingpeople.html INDEX TO MISSING PEOPLE FOUND IN VICTORIA POLICE CORRESPONDENCE RECORDS. Compiled by Helen D. Harris OAM (c) Helen D. Harris OAM, 2000. The details listed below were located in uncatalogued and unindexed police correspondence files held in the Public Record Office, Victoria, Australia. These items all have one thing in common: they were written by people outside Australia, to the police department in Victoria, in an attempt to locate 'missing' individuals. The persons sought could be long-lost relatives or friends; husbands or wives who had deserted their spouses; suspected bigamists; or even people who had been in Victoria and who had committed a crime while overseas. The files contain widely differing material: some people supply only basic details about the sought person, others give a great deal of background information. The response from the police department likewise differs enormously. At times the department simply responded that the letter writer had supplied insufficient detail for any identification to be made; on other occasions the department went to a great deal of trouble to locate the missing person. There are over 2,000 boxes of material covering the period 1853 to 1940; there can be up to 300 files within each box. Many of the files relate to routine police business, but interspersed with these are files relating to missing people. What follows is a selection of these cases only - it would be the task of a lifetime to index every file in every box. Please note that I do not have this material in my possession; it is held at the Public Record Office. However, for a fee of $AUS20 per file plus photocopying costs, I am willing to organise copies of a file. Accessing these files requires a visit to the PRO, ordering the relevant box of material, locating the file, ordering a photocopy and collecting that copy about a week later. ARRANGING PHOTOCOPIES OF THE FILES. 1. Note the names, date and detail of the file, including the number of pages involved. 2. Work out the cost of photocopying, at 55c. per page, (including GST) as charged by the Public Record Office. Add $AUS20 retrieval fee for each file. (No GST charged on retrieval fee.) 3. Send a cheque in Australian Dollars made out to Harriland Press to P.O. Box 92, Forest Hill, Australia, 3131. If you wish to send a cheque in a foreign currency please allow $Aust7 bank fee. New Zealand orders are advised to email me for alternate arrangements. Please include two International Reply Paid Coupons for return postage if outside Australia, (obtainable from any post office) otherwise a $1 Australian stamp. 4. Remember to supply your own address, including if possible an email address. 5. You will be emailed when your letter arrives and the photocopies are ordered, and again when your order has been posted to you. Please be advised that there is currently some 14 days delay in photocopying orders at the Public Record Office. Hello Alan Thanks for the message. You have two choices - transcribe for an existing project, or become an organiser for the area of your choice. We have yet to achieve cover for large chunks of Lancashire. An organiser recruits and supervises a team of volunteers to transcribe a county or part of a county. All the support you need is provided including software, microfiche and dedicated mailing lists. Looking forward to hearing from you - and anyone else who feels tempted! 3. Hi Alan, Did you really intend writing to me as my name is Ian not Michael? If you did then all I can say right now is that there are two full-time programmers working on the new Townview.co.uk site and it should replace the existing site in 7-10 days time. It is aimed very heavily at Salford, Eccles, Worsley and surrounding districts. It is hoped it will become a base for locals and ex-pats worldwide. There are a number of features which the keen genealogist will find useful. Not the least of which will be the facility to upload your own personal details with photo and some blurb to go with it. A Scrap Book attached to your site. A facility to look for Old Friends. A Noticeboard. A Forum on any subject you want. Old photographs which you can download. Listings of local services, companies, clubs and societies. And many more features. I will bear in mind your kind offer but at this stage we are debugging and do not require additional programming help. Once the site is up and running, I am sure you will find many aspects that could interest you and occupy much of your time. Help with family history data could well be required at that time. 3. Hello: I am trying to find out where to write to obtain birth, marriage, death certificates for ancestors born in the Eccles area. I have written to the Manchester Register but they advise they only cover Manchester City and not Greater Manchester. I have written to the Kingslea, Barton Rd. Swinton Address and they forwarded the letter to the Manchester Register. I would really appreciate knowing where to write or an e-mail address for records. Most of the records would be out of Eccles Parish Church, or Patricroft Christ Church. Thank you. Sylvia sylviascove@interbaun.com

We have projects covering the 1891 returns for Bolton, Ormskirk, Wigan, Leigh, Preston, Fylde & Garstang. There are two more projects in the pipeline for Bootle, Kirkby & Liverpool. All of these projects need volunteers. We would also like to recruit organisers to cover the rest of the 1891 Lancashire returns. To be a transcriber you just need some time, a computer and access to a microfiche reader. Or if you could use the 1891 discs. Everything you need is provided by the project, including software and microfiche. Organisers recruit and supervise a team of volunteers to transcribe a county or part of a county. 1. [ECCLES] Edwin HOLDEN born in Eccles c1839
    2. Elsie Hemming
    3. My grandfather, Edwin HOLDEN, born in Eccles, is shown in the 1881 census as having a brokers shop or furniture dealer at 182 Liverpool Road, Barton Upon Irwell. His wife is Fanny. I should very much like to know the surname of his first wife - Fanny - as grandpa was supposed to have divorced her for misconduct. This must have been between 1881 and 1886 when he married my grandmother, Florence Louise DOBBINS and lived at 54 Ordsall Lane, Salford - another brokers-cum-secondhand shop by the sound of the description - where my father Edwin Arthur HOLDEN was born in 1889. Family anecdote says that Edwin HOLDEN had to have a special Act of Parliament for his divorce but this seems strange to me, as I believe an Act of Parliament was not necessary at that time. I was wondering whether any local newspapers might have published details of the divorce, as that must have been rather rare. Fanny, whatever her name was (I think it was TONGE) apparently ran off with the local vicar. Any help would be much appreciated. TIA Elsie Hemming

    1. [ECCLES] (ECCLES ) GREGORY
    2. Hi Carol, I have not got anybody called Isabella in this branch of my family tree so far.I do not have any information from Eccles. I found my 2xGt.Grandfather, Samuel GREGORY(age 54, birthplace Eccles), on the 1871 census with his wife Hannah and son Samuel(age 21, birthplace Manchester). Hannah and Samuel, who were both widowed, married in 1869 when Samuel was 52. The marriage certificate shows his father's name as Samuel. He and his first wife, Emma Stevenson, had five children that I am aware of: - Emma Ann b.1838, Betsey b.1842, Ann Emily b.1845, Jane b.1848 Samuel b.1849,(my gt.grandfather) The children were all Christened at Manchester Cathedral. The 1881 census shows Samuel's age as 60. There are two Samuels on the IGI who fit : - Samuel GREGORY b.1814 Croftsbank Eccles parents Samuel & Alice Samuel GREGORY b.1815 Pendleton Eccles " Samuel & Mary. I have been searching the ENG-LAN-ECCLES archives and I have seen the lists of Gregorys which you have posted from the Newspapers etc. Is this information available on-line or do you have to go to Eccles to obtain it? If I spot your Isabella in my research I will let you know. Samuel appears to be an important name in my family. 1. [ECCLES] GENUKI Page Maintainers Needed
    2. Carol, TreeTops
    3. Forwarded from the LISTOWNERS-ENGWLS Mailing List: Hi We are seeking volunteers to fill vacancies that have arisen for county page developers in GENUKI, the UK & Ireland Genealogical information service, particularly but not solely in Scotland. GENUKI is widely regarded as the premier on-line source for information about UK genealogy - it now contains more than 30,000 pages, occupying over 450 Mbytes of information, and over fifty people (many of whom have further helpers) are involved in its maintenance. The counties concerned are: ENGLAND - Berkshire, London, Middlesex, Shropshire, Somerset, Surrey SCOTLAND - Banffshire, Berwickshire, Bute, Dunbartonshire, Dumfriesshire, Kincardineshire, Midlothian, Moray, Nairnshire, Peebles-shire, Renfrewshire, Roxburghshire, Selkirkshire, Shetland, Stirlingshire, Sutherland, West Lothian WALES - Merionethshire, Monmouthshire The main requirements of county page volunteers are threefold: 1. Either considerable experience of family research in the specific area(s), or local knowledge and contacts within the area. 2. The ability to create simple HTML pages directly and also maintain them (including a basic understanding of HTML, directory structure management, and FTP). 3. Lots of enthusiasm! The work involved in taking responsibility for a county page is described at http://www.genuki.org.uk/org/guide.html. The amount of work that county page developers do varies considerably, and is of course governed by the amount of time they have available, the extent to which they can enlist the help of others - as indeed many have successfully done - and the level of ambition that they set for their pages. This is of course influenced by what other volunteers are managing elsewhere on their GENUKI county and parish pages - many of which have become rather impressive! However, we are keen to get to the stage where all the rest of our counties have at least basic information pages for all of their parishes. I'd be happy to try and answer any queries from potential volunteers for the above counties - and would also encourage people interested in helping with any of the other counties to contact the respective county page maintainer directly. (His/her name is to be found via the link to GENUKI maintainers near the foot of the GENUKI main page, http://www.genuki.org.uk/.) Anyone interested in helping with the Ireland section of GENUKI, which also has a number of vacancies, is invited to contact Richard White <white@hiwaay.net>. cheers Brian Randell ==== LISTOWNERS-ENGWLS Mailing List ==== .
