    3. Hi all, I am hoping SKS would be able to find an entry in a Bolton newspaper about the circumstances surrounding my great grandfather's death on 9 May 1922. George Herbert Knight drowned in a mill pond off High Rid Road in Lostock. There was an inquest held the following day, and the family story is that the verdict was undetermined. No worries, I'm prepared for anything the article may say, assuming there is one. Thanks in advance, Leisha Central Penna, USA

    3. Hi Leisha, I thought at first that this sounded like High Rid Reservoir, High Rid Lane, Lostock. You can see an aerial view of it at http://maps.google.com/ Enter BL6 4AJ and click Search That gets you to he Bolton Golf Club. Click 'Hybrid' in the top right corner so you get images and road names Drag the image down until High Rid Lane appears at the top of the screen, then drag the image left until the reservoir appears on the right. There's a contemporary drowning report at http://archive.thisislancashire.co.uk/1999/7/28/763550.html However, the 1920 map (I'll send you a copy off list) shows, in addition to High Rid Reservoir, another lodge and two small reservoirs just to the east, on the south side of the road, just after High Rid Lane becomes Old Hall Lane. The lodge is now a roughly rectangular field surrounded by trees. The two small reservoirs still exist, on the aerial view looking almost like shadows of the clumps of trees in the adjacent area enclosed by the road and the trees. Since you have the description 'mill pond', possibly the now-filled in lodge is the most likely location for the drowning. I hope that's some use.
