Valerie, He was alive in September 1859 as his employment on the Elizabeth's wedding certificate was given as Carter. I have not found John's marriage. But where was Richard in the previous census years when his children were being looked after by relations. I have looked at deaths after 1859 but because they do not give the age, I do not know which one, any help would be appreciated.
