I'm reading Capt.Dewhurst's Diary at the moment (1716-1806) in which there is mention of a school in Halliwell. <The Township Book tells that in 1723 he (the Captain's father) was listed as a trustee for the House commonly called the Schoole or Thomas Dickens Hous. Thomas Bromiley said that he went to school at a place called Top of Halliwell next door to old Roger Dewhursts House." Roger Dewhurst lived at Halliwell Hall opposite Harpurs (now Harper's Lane). The diary goes on to say that it was decided to rebuild the old Schoolhouse in 1735. "John Mayoh was a Dewhurst tenant living at Harpurs and at the burial of his wife at Turton in 1794 he is said to be "Schoolmaster of Halliwell". The old Halliwell school was close to Harpurs.> Captains Clough acquired its name after Capt. Roger Dewhurst. He owned quite a bit of land stretching down as far as what is today Ivy Road, which was well timbered. The sale of this was quite a profitable sideline for him, and there is mention of his selling a lot of timber to Peter Ainsworth's wife for a new kitchen at Smithills Hall. I wonder if the school built in 1810 could have been built on the same site as the original Halliwell school. I notice though that the school was built in 1810. Was that associated with an earlier church in the area? Martin Briscoe Fort William M&LFHS | Gwynedd FHS
