    1. [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] New to the List - HOLT's in Turton & Egerton

    3. Hello list, my research interest is the name of HOLT which I have managed (with the help of others) to trace back to George HOLT b. 1580. I understand that the family lived at Shore Farm in Turton and wondered if it is still there today or whether it has been demolished. I also have a Benjamin HOLT b. 1820ish at Shore Farm, Turton who married Ellen Whowell who was b.in Egerton. Benjamin was a Quarryman according to his marriage certificate in 1840 which was confirmed by the 1841 Census where it states he worked in a Stone Quarry - does anyone know where that quarry would have been. He and his family were living at Globe Cottages which I understand was next door to the Globe Inn (assumption as this is the next house on the census). He was still working there 10 years later on the 1851 census. By this stage he had 6 children - how big would the cottage have been? Does anyone know if these cottages still exist? I have been on the Egerton website and seen the Globe Inn. By the 1861 Census, Benjamin was still in Egerton but am unsure if he was at the same address as this is not stated. He had left the Quarry and was working as a Bobbit Cleaner in a Cotton Mill as were a number of his children. Was there a Cotton Mill in the area? Other children are showing as working in a Factory, again was there one nearby? By this time Benjamin and Ellen has 10 children! As you can see, I have many questions - if there is a book about Turton and Egerton I would love to know so that I can get a better understanding of the area - does one exists? Not being familiar with that area I would love any info anyone can give about the history of both places. Thanks so much, Rachel.
