Hi Anne, I've been looking at the James Hulme information you gave me, and I've looked it up in the 1851 census (I don't have an 1841). I still don't really know what to think about this. Firstly Cross Street really is Little Bolton and not Turton, it runs (or ran) off Kay Street, parallel to Turton Street and so is a more reasonable fit with James' birth in Halliwell. The age bothers me, as it's a bit too old, but of course his age does vary with the other records I have found. This James is definitely a possible. I'm going to see if I can make any connection with the Butterworth or Brindle names (mostly the former) as guess he MUST be connected to the family he's living with. By the way, you had the letters F.S next to Alice Butterworth in 1841, what does that mean? Cheers, Pete Hulme
Hi Pete, First of all F.S. is Female Servant. I have been back to the library to carry on looking for the baptism of James Hulme at St. Peter's. I have now done all of 1834 and up to the end of January, 1837. There were no James' with a father James, born Halliwell, and there were no James' with a single mother, who would fit yours. I also looked at Deane Church records, as Halliwell was in the parish of Deane. There was a Mary Ann Hulme baptised on the 19.4.1835, the daughter of Joseph and Jane Hulme, Halliwell, weaver. I wonder if Joseph Hulme is related to the parent/parents of James? I have just looked at my Bolton Library handbook and they were doing baptisms at All Saints' Church, Little Bolton at the time your James was born, so I will have a look at these records the next time I go to town. When I looked at a fairly old Bolton A-Z there was only a Cross Street in Turton showing. I have now looked at a 1908 Ordnance Survey Map of Bolton North, which is not indexed, but I have managed to find Cross Street in Little Bolton. It crosses Hulme Street. My grandmother was born a Brindle. My Brindles originated in the Lostock area of Bolton, moving to Chorley, Preston, Halliwell and ending up in Farnworth. It is a pity the Brindle that James Hulme is living with in 1841 and 1851 is not related to me. I will get back to you when I have looked at the All Saints' records. Hi Pete, I forgot to mention that I made a note of some Hulme baptisms at St. Peter's. You may want to keep them on file. Ellen d. Mary Hulme, spinster, Little Bolton 5.20.1836. Abraham Hulme s. William and Betty Hulme, collier, Little Bolton. This is Abraham Brindle's baptism - Abraham Butterworth Brindle son of George and Mary Brindle, spinner, Little Bolton 21.2.1836.
