Hi, Hoping you all can help! I've been lurking on the group for quite a while, mainly because my McINNES line lived in Bolton between about 1890 and 1895 en route between Glasgow and Oldham. In the 1891 census they lived at 66 Union Road, Tongue with Haulgh, and my Gt Grandfather George McINNES was a brass foundry worker. I have a big brick wall in the shape of my Gt Grandmother Emily Ann SHEPHERD, who married George McINNES on 16 May 1892 at Bolton Register Office. I have the marriage cert, which shows her father as James SHEPHERD, and her age as 21 which gives a birth year of approx. 1871. In the 1891 census she is living at 4 Robert Street, Little Bolton with her mother Rosa SHEPHERD (status S = spinster? single?) and younger sister Gertrude. Her birthplace is given as Blackley, Northampton, as is Rosa's. (There is no Blackley in Northamptonshire, although there is a Brackley and a Blakesley) However, Gertrude was born Bolton, and in later census returns Emily's birthplace is given as Bolton. I can't find Emily in the 1881 census, or any marriage record of Rose SHEPHERD, or any clear link to a James SHEPHERD. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I go from here? (NB There is another Rose SHEPHERD who seems to have been born in Northants and later moved to Lancashire, but in later censuses she has the wrong children and husband, which all goes to make it the more confusing.) Sandie
Hi Sandie, I have found the following on the Free BMD's Emily Shepherd born March Qtr. 1872 Bolton Gertrude Shepherd born June Quarter 1880 Bolton. You could apply to the Register Office at Mere Hall, Bolton for the birth certificates and ask them to send them if the mother's name is shown as Rosa. This will probably explain who the father was. Kind regards, Anne in Bolton. ----- Original Message ----- From: <RevSandie@aol.com> To: <ENG-LAN-BOLTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 26, 2006 10:45 PM Subject: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Emily Ann SHEPHERD > Hi, > > Hoping you all can help! > > I've been lurking on the group for quite a while, mainly because my > McINNES > line lived in Bolton between about 1890 and 1895 en route between Glasgow > and > Oldham. Hello Sandie I don't have much to add, just a query about some of your information. You said that in 1891 Emily Shepherd is in Bolton and her birthplace is given as Blackley, Northampton. Then you say that in later census returns Emily's birthplace is given as Bolton. The only later available census is 1901 by which time she is Emily McInnes married to George. Is she not with her family in Oldham at that time as follows (I don't have access to Ancestry, so the following people are on the same census page, but admittedly not necessarily the same family)? George McI 29 b.Scotland Carter Emily McI 29 born Northampton Blackley Gertrude McI 10 bBolton Sarah McI 8 bBolton George 6 bOldham Emily 5 bOldham Agnes 3 bOldham This would fit with the couple being married in Bolton in 1892, possibly with their ages fudged up to 21. Anne mentioned a Gertrude born in Bolton 1880 - I'd guess she was the one born in Sharples with parents Joseph & Mary J. in the 1881 census, living in Manchester. Peter Wood
