I'm attending a funeral on Monday of a 101-year-old aunt, with the service held at St Bartholomew's, Westhoughton, but I've been told that the interment will take place not in any part of the churchyard but at a separate cemetery off Market Street, where her mother is buried. I was not aware of any other cemetery near the church, and I thought I knew the area reasonably well. Does anyone know if this other burial ground exists and, if it does, where it is? Thanks for any help, Rgds, Bob Thornley, Bolton
I don't know the area but I note that Pevsner says of St Bartholomew's that "the churchyard has been extended West to form the town cemetery". That seems to fit with what is shown on MAGIC if it is the church at SD 652 059 http://www.magic.gov.uk You can see the different layout in the two parts but perhaps not so obvious on the ground. The LFH&HS book on Lancashire Cemeteries lists the town cemetery and St Bartholomew's separately. By the way, I am puzzled about the comment that when the church was rebuilt in the 1990s they made sure that the new buildings did not quite touch the tower which meant that it was exempt from VAT?
