Hello. My great-grandfather, Thomas Hamer had a sister, Alice Hamer, born Breightmet about 1853. In a photo in the 1890's recently discovered, she is with my grandfather as a little boy. She was, by then, it seems Lady Groves. They might have married somewhere other than Bolton, of course. I can't figure how to find the marriage. I have ancestry.com - and have tried the IGI, without luck. Can anyone suggest another way to check marriages without going through 1837online one 1/4 at a time? It's a longtime since I've worked on Lancashire genealogy - now there are so many lists. I'm sure there was another way to find marriages - but am having trouble remembering hos I did it in thepast. Hi Ros, I've checked FreeBMD for this marriage from 1873 to 1890 but haven't found it. Have you considered the possibility that she might have married twice, and therefore would not have been Alice Hamer when she married Groves? Have you found her on any census. If so, could I please have the details. Thanks. Hi, Valerie. It's possible she married a second time, although I can't find a wedding. Alice Hamer is a common name, so it's difficult. there is Alice Draper Hamer married Grove - in about 1896 after his first wife died. In which case, is it possible they put the Draper before Hamer even though she'd been Draper? It's so tricky... sigh - but lots of fun...
