Hi All, With regard to the differing policies of allocation of readers at Bolton Archives; I did attend there on 4th April and was immediately told that I couldn't have a reader for the 3 hours that I was promised by email (Josh). I was told only an hour at a time and that I would have to rebook each hour. Fortunately I didn't need a reader immediately but later was able to get one without any trouble. This system appeared to work for all visitors with hardly anyone having to wait too long. I found the staff very helpful and found what I set out to verify. I took time at both Wigan History shop and Bolton Archives to peruse Parish Registers and whilst there is a lot of information I am posting it here for anyone out there who may be researching Horrobins from Bolton. I have also added details from grave-stones. Bolton Horrobins - Grave Headstones St Peter's Parish Church, Bolton The grounds around St Peter's Parish Church Bolton have been cleared of most of the grave headstones and monuments; only a few large memorial graves survive in the name of prominent Boltonians such as Pilkington and Crompton. All other headstones have either been placed around the graveyard propped against the cemetery wall or as paving stones in the pathways and drip-gully against the church wall. Paying particular attention to the Horrobin name I found the following all damaged headstones:- 1.. "Here resteth the body of ALICE daughter of WILLIAM HORROBIN of Little Bolton who departed this life the - - - Day of May 1752 ? (date virtually unreadable due to damage) in the 9th year of her age" 2.. "JOHN HORROBIN of Bolton Le Moor was here interred the 15 day of July 1699" "WILLIAM HORROBIN died the 28th June 1712" 3.. "E. H. 166 - " ? (piece broken off) "Here resteth the body of DOROTHY the wife of WILLIAM HORROBIN of Bolton" 4.. "Here rests the body of RICHARD the son of JOHN & MARTHA HORROBIN of Gt Bolton he departed this life the 8th ? (damaged) day of April 1780 ? (damaged) in the 6th year of his age". There is then several lines of verse most of which is unreadable, then .. "also JOHN son of JOHN & MARTHA HORROBIN who died May 11th 1788 in the 16th year of his age". Then more lines of verse. St James' Church, Breightmet, Bolton The older section of St James' churchyard has been extensively vandalised with many headstones face down and many others missing. A fairly detailed search found the following:- 1.. "WILLIAM HENRY HORROBIN the beloved husband of LUISA HORROBIN who died April 11th 1900 aged 36 years. Also LUISA wife of the above who died June 11th 1931 aged 70 years. 2.. "To the the memory of our dear sister EMILY HORROBIN who died October 2nd 1925 in her 63rd year. Also Enoch dearly loved husband of LEAH ALICE HOWARTH and brother in law of the above who died December 22nd 1946 aged 80 years. LEAH ALICE HOWARTH who died May 6th 1949 aged 78 years. Also FRANCIS THOMAS FARNWORTH grandson of the above who died January 29th 1893 aged 16 months. Also JAMES OPENSHAW great grandson of the above who died Dec 2nd 1922 aged 9 months" 4.. "Sacred to the memory of THOMAS HORROBIN of Breightmet who departed this life April 16th 1870 aged 83 years. Also ANN wife of the above who died Sept 15th 1872 aged 66 years. SARAH daughter of THOMAS and JANE HORROBIN born Sept 12th 1831 died January 23rd 1866. JOHN THOMAS son of THOMAS and JANE HORROBIN and grandson of the above who died Feb 2nd 1886 in his 18th year. Also the above named THOMAS the beloved husband of JANE HORROBIN died August 8th 1904" 5.. In memory of HENRIETTA daughter of WILLIAM HORROBIN and ELIZABETH SLATER of Haulgh died Oct 21st 1876 aged 6 months. WILLIAM HORROBIN SLATER who died on the 13th December 1883 aged 34 years. Also ELIZABETH wife of the above who died May 17th 1913 aged 68 years. Hi Roy, I'm deeply disappointed to see that all that effort hasn't turned up any clues to any of my lot, but just to show that I won't hold a grudge here are a pair of Horrobin twins that you didn't mention, just in case you're not aware of them: 18 April 1824 Bapt.
