    1. Identifying street in Great Bolton

    3. Hello, I've joined this list after receiving the 1839 marriage certificate of my ancestors John MELLET and Briget LOFTUS at Pilkington Street Catholic Chapel (I think I got this part right). Both were born in Mayo, Ireland but at the time of the marriage, both were residing at John's mother Mary Mellet's home at No 9 Back (here's the tricky part) what looks like Garves or Dawes Street, Great Bolton. In the residence section of the certificate, Bridget's entry also has what looks like Newtown between the street name and Great Bolton. I'm hoping that Mary was still alive in 1841 and therefore in the census. I was surprised to find that Mary MELLET was also in England. It's quite possible that Bridget's father Anthony LOFTUS, a tailor, was also in Bolton or elsewhere in England. I don't know Bridget's mother's name yet. John's father was Thomas but as he isn't mentioned I guess he may have died earlier. One of the witnesses to the marriage was Bridget Mellet, the other Michael ???ncy. John and Bridget left England for Australia soon after their marriage, arriving here in 1840. Any help with any of this most gratefully accepted. Kind regards, Katrina Smythe Australia

    3. There is a Dawes Street and Back Dawes Street with a very large number of Irish there in 1841 but I can't see Mellet. 3. Martin, Thanks very much for this and your other email. I wasn't aware of the 1821 and 1831 census, I recall reading something about a pre-1841 census but thought that it didn't include names. Well I suppose Back Dawes is the right street. I'll look for a death of Mary Mellet 1839-1841. It's also possible that she went to Australia too. I'm guessing that you looked under other possible spellings as you had for the other census entries. It became Millet in Australia. Thanks again for your help.
