As I mentioned in an earlier post, my Hartley ancestors from Westhoughton and Wingates often appear in the registers with the surname spelt "Hartliff" and sometimes "Hartcliff" (and with variations of these). Does anyone know how they would actually have pronounced their name? For that matter, how is it pronounced in the area nowadays? Searching the IGI for Hartliff shows most of them to be in the Bolton-Wigan-Leigh area, with a few in Cheshire and Yorkshire, and mostly before 1800. None from Colne, which is where the biggest concentration of Hartleys with the usual spelling was. -- David Hartley
