Hello fellow listers, My name is Anne and my direct ancestors were born in Chequerbent and the Chew Moor / Lostock areas. My late grandfather, Seth Holding born in 1900 in Adlington ran a small grocer's shop on Bolton Road Westhoughton with his second wife Alice Lowe , daughter of John Lowe and my great aunt another shop in Chequerbent at 693/5 Manchester Road known in it`s day as Jack Party`s. My gt aunt was Doris Partington , Jack`s daughter. I often visited both shops as a child ......proper old fashioned shops with floor to ceiling wooden shelves and rows of those big glass jars filled with toffees. My mother attended Chequerbent School/ Mission Church on Manchester Road in the 1930's and later Westhoughton Girls School and was involved in local music bands , one being called Barbara Lobb and her Broadcasting Orchestra. They performed for the radio, hence the name. My mother played accordion ...still can. Has anyone else heard of this band? Note to ANDREA....Chequerbent Mission, according to my mother, was used as a place of worship on Sundays and during the week was an educational establishment for infants/juniors, the secondary school being on the opposite side of Manchester Rd. Anyone please correct me if I`m wrong. I don't like to post inaccurate information. The SMITHS lived at Wicken Lees Farm for many a year, apparently `dealing`in horses as well as running a farm. Family myth has them as a bit of a rum bunch. I`ve tracked down other farms/ smallholdings/cottages they inhabited including Smith Fold in 1851. At present I'm hoping to find out what happened to some of my gt grandmothers siblings all of whom were born I assume at Wicken Lees namely: William Smith b 1869 and his wife Clara ( nee Boden ) and daughter Elizabeth Ann who in 1901 lived at 160 Chulsey? Gate Lane, Wingates, working as Coal miner/ Hewer. Walter Smith b 1876 Thomas Smith b 1878 George Smith b 1880 Gerrard Smith b 1888 If anyone could furnish me with what happened to any of these people after 1901 , I would be grateful. I know of the headstone at St John`s Wingates with John Smith and wife Alice and that of Susannah Partington and Edwin ( thanks for the transcriotions found online ) It's a bit of a job finding correct deaths with the Smith name so family connections might help, if there are any.) Many thanks, Anne
HI Anne I was so interested to read about your conncection with Chequerbent - I lived there from 1948-53 and attended Chequerbent School. The Mission was the junior school and was also used for social occasions - I recall attending dances there on Saturday evenings in the early 1960's because although we then lived in Atherton I had a cousin who still lived in Chequerbent. The junior school was demolished to make way for the road improvements (?) when the motorway was built. The infant school was across the road (this was the school I attended) and I have a photograph of our class taken in the school yard (c.1952). The building is still there, and I can't recall what it is used for now. It consisted of two classrooms with a sliding wooden partition between them. I have a photograph of the class at work in the classroom which opened on to the road. You mentioned the Smith family. I don't know if they are connected, but we lived at 487 Manchester Road 1948-53 and our neighbours (at 489) were called Smith. The row of houses is opposite what is now the Mercury Motel, but in the 1950s was the site of Sagar's Farm. The Smiths had a son called Percy (probably in his 20s or 30s) who I recall had some kind of learning difficulties, and who I think worked on the farm. I'm sorry I don't recall his parents' Christian names, but they seemed to me (as a 5 year old) to be very old, so they probably weren't as old as they seemed. I hope that this information is useful to you, if you need any further information, do drop me an email. Best wishes Lynne ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, January 14, 2008 2:19 PM Subject: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Chequerbent, Lostock, Wingates and SMITHS > Hello fellow listers, > > My name is Anne and my direct ancestors were born in Chequerbent and the > Chew Moor / Lostock areas. Hi Anne, I noticed your reference to the Partington name, I have a relative who married a Edith Partington of Wingates 1904 . Her father was Joseph Partington a collier. regards Jim [email protected] wrote: Hello fellow listers, My name is Anne and my direct ancestors were born in Chequerbent and the Chew Moor / Lostock areas.
