Hi all, Any latin translators out there - or anyone with a suggestion re the following puzzle? I was in Preston LRO last week looking at the baptism records for St pat's, SSPeter & Paul and st Edmunds. ( incidentally the same films in Bolton are an earlier poor copy, whilst the Preston ones are actaully readable as they have been re photographed. ) Anyway one of my relatives has changed their surname in the register - and the appropriate column gives both the real name and the changed name. next to that it says "rel Hatzer " I cant find a translation for this abbreviation - well i presume its an abbreviated latin word. It's possible it could be oel or del not rel, but it appears more likely to be rel. Perhaps rel - simply means previously or something along those lines? In subsequent years - for the next children , they simply revert to their real name. They went from Hatzer to Hodser. I can imagine they did this in 1890's Bolton due to the prejudice experienced by the Irish and I know they found it hard to get decent jobs from family recollections . Anybody have any suggestions or experience of this? sarah ********************************** This e-mail and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual to whom it is addressed.
