In case you can't find her Martha Green is living at Mayfield in the 1881 census. A 64 yr old annuitant with a visitor and a servant. Thanks Her husband, John GREEN, was a magistrate in 1871 and a Poor Law Guardian in 1876 so it seems quite likely that his widow took on a similar role after his death. You don't mean a formal role do you? I dont think I have every seen a woman listed in a public office like that at that date. But well to do women were very active in charities and you might find Mrs Green listed as an office bearer. The nature of the charity might in turn give you more clues about the family. It was just that they seem to have been quite a wealthy family, her husband had a couple of positions like that but probably died at the end of the 1870s. I haven't got any directories covering the 1880s and she died in 1890 so no where to check. If they were supporters of a charity or something then she could have taken over his position - money counts!
