    3. Hi All Am trying to establish the chances of researching census info [Halliwell and Westhoughton] using 'Ancestry' While the various census records are included in this Ancestry site, what is not stated is the population % which has been indexed for each of the Lancashire census from 1841 to 1901---knowing this will help ascertain the chances of success Can anyone supply this info Thanks Robert From the Roaring Forties

    3. Robert So far as I am aware the censuses are supposed to be a full record of the whole population on specific Sunday nights in Spring. There were obviously people away from home but even they are supposed to be picked up staying as visitors and lodgers etc. The information was collected by Enumerators and the process overseen by local Registrars. A few census pages from some areas went missing years ago and you can find the list of these on Ancestry I believe. Cross checking Ancestry with Find My Past and Family Search which also have some of the censuses does show that the Ancestry coverage and particularly transcription is not 100% accurate but it's pretty good and using the others as well usually results in finding your folk. Transcription errors and misspellings obviously occur which is why it is good to use all sources possible. Hope this helps. I have Halliwells from Leigh and Atherton in my tree so we may have a connection. Happy hunting.
