Hello List. Can someone help me with the following. I don't think it is a medal more of a medallion. On the front it has at the top, a crown, under that the word UBIQUE, under that a wheel, then QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUGUNT. Then finally The Bolton Artillery. The reverse side has 210 BTY 1928. This belonged to my Father who was born in 1911, so that would make him just 17 years of age in 1928. Also when I googled with Bolton Artillery 210 BTY I got Staffordshire, why would this be when it was the Bolton Artillery. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Regards. Perle Brooking. I had a look on GOOGLE BOOKS (http://books.google.co.uk/books?lr=&q=%22bolton+artillery%22&num=50&as_brr= 0&spell=1&oi=spell) and found this reference http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t9081.html This says that in WWI Bolton Artillery was 211th Brigade and that it is now (or at least in 2004) 216th Brigade (I think he means Battery rather than Brigade). There is an address of someone in the unit in 2004 who had access to the unit museum. The message refers to Sources: Lt-Col B. Palin Dobson, "History of the Bolton Artillery 1860-1928"; aj Wingfield, "The Bolton Artillery, A History, 1860-1975. Also there is another mention of The Bolton Artillery: A History, 1860-1975. Bolton. 1976. 15606 VERDIN (Sir RICHARD). Presumably Bolton Library will have these two books so someone might be able to check them. Hello Martin. Thanks for your email, it gave me some insight but I still wonder what a 17 year old was doing, would it be like our Army Reserves. I know Dad was a fabulous shot. Regards. Perle Brooking. Younghusband. South Australia.
There could have been high unemployment in 1928 so perhaps he saw joining the TA as a way of getting some training and a route into possibly joining the regular army. I think could have been like your current reserves where members attend an evening each week, some weekends and an annual camp. Some would have joined the TA directly and others have already served in the regular Army (I think they were required to spend a period in the Reserve). I would try contacting either someone in local RA battery or the RA museum to confirm the number as it probably has changed quite a number of times. Hi Perle, The Bolton Royal Artillery battery were based at the Drill Hall Silverwell Street Bolton as a Territorial battery until the 1980s, I think that was their HQ prior to WW1. 'Ubique' and the longer one are both Latin mottoes of the Royal Artillery. I found a reference in The Times of 1923 to the "Manchester and Bolton Artillery (four batteries each)", on a training exercise. A battery is an artillery unit. ie a number of guns and men. The batteries are grouped into battalions, which in turn are part of regiments. A brigade is a much larger army unit made up of regimental battalions. The number 216 seems to be associated with Bolton so I wonder if there is a worn bit or a scratch and you have misread it. Whilst there seems to be one battery number for Bolton now, I suspect that in the 1920s each battery had a separate number. You can see from this link how it worked. http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/22/a3517922.shtml Judy On 7 Apr 2008, at 06:39, Perle wrote: > Hello List. > > Can someone help me with the following.
