My grandfather's brother Samuel Simms was killed in France in October 1914. He was buried in France and I have found the memorium on the CWG site. However, few months ago I found a web site that gave me a link to the memorial at the local Church which the family attended. I traced my grandmother's brother who was in the Army in the first world war but died at home on this memorial. He was buried at Deane Cemetary. The local Church is St. Helens Road Methodist Church, St. Helens Road, Bolton. Does anyone know the web site? Regards Margaret Booth --------------------------------- Sent from Yahoo! Mail. Do you mean the Channel 4 Lost Generation website at http://www.channel4.com/history/microsites/L/lostgeneration/index.html. That certainly has the memorial you mention but as you don't give the name of your grandmother's brother I can't tell if this is the correct one. Thank you. This is the site but unfortunately his memorium is not listed. His name is Samuel Sim or Sims or Simms - On the Common Wealth Graves Commission site it is listed as Simms. Could anyone help me to find where Nuttall Houses were in Halliwell, I had a great uncle living there in 1881. The first address on the page is 2, Top o'th Crop and the last one 3, Delph Hill. Thank you, Margaret Horrocks
Top of the Croft was on Boot Lane which runs off Chorley Old Road & Delph Hill is nearby. I can find nothing in my directory of 1935 apart from a Nuttall House - 6 Merehall Street. Margaret, Delph Hill is on Chorley Old Road beyond Johnson Fold, in a district of Bolton known as Doffcocker, I have a 1882 map of the area but can't find any reference to Nuttalls house's. Top of the Crop.might mean top of the Hill , there s a steep rise in Chorley Old road from Johnson Fold to Old Kiln Lane.
Just having a look at the 1850-ish 6" map and 1895 25" map The 1850-ish 6" map shows Nuttall Row but it is not clear which it is referring to! It is half way between Boot Lane and Delph and by Doffcocker Mill. There is a large building which I presume is Doffcocker Mill then just past it there seems to be a row of houses at right angles to present day Chorley Old Road. On the 1895 the mill is Delph Hill Mill and the houses just past it are aligned along the roadside but there are four of them which fits with your Nuttall Houses. I notice also that on the 1881 census it is written Nuttall Row then with "Row" crossed out and replaced by "Houses". There seem to be four of them I can send you map extracts if you want so you can make up your own mind (or get even more confused) Martin Briscoe Fort William M&LFHS | Gwynedd FHS > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of > Margaret Horrocks > Sent: 30 May 2008 15:45 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Halliwell > > Could anyone help me to find where Nuttall Houses were in > Halliwell, I had a great uncle living there in 1881. Martin, I would love to see a map of the Halliwell area, and as you say it will probably add to my confusion. I hope it proves that William Horrocks was living near his nephew, I just do not know why he moved from his farm in Horwich to Halliwell to be an Out Door Labourer, and died in the Work House. Thanks in advance for sending me the map. Margaret
The War Grave Photographic Project is adding photographs of war graves to their site, they have many that have not been added so you can ask if they have a photograph of the war grave in France. http://www.twgpp.org/ Martin Briscoe Fort William M&LFHS | Gwynedd FHS > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of > Margaret Booth > Sent: 11 March 2008 10:53 > To: Bolton > Subject: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Samuel Simms (also known as Sim or Sims) > > My grandfather's brother Samuel Simms was killed in France in > October 1914.
