    3. Hi, Seeking someone with local historical knowledge of the cotton mills in Farnworth. Does anyone know the history of Egerton Mill at Moses Gate? I know that in 1891 it was occupied by Philp & Thomas Bateman It seems to have been rebuilt on a slightly different site some time between 1893 and 1909 according to various Ordnance Survey maps, as by 1909, Phethean Street and Thorne Street now occupy the place on the earlier maps where most of the mill was depicted. I have some current anecdotal evidence that at some time after 1891 Egerton Mill became part of John Phethean & Co Ltd, who were of course the next mill in Cawdor Street at what became known as ³Cawdor Mill². I¹m having trouble proving this though. BTW, I have tried Williams & Farnie ³Cotton Mills in Greater Manchester² which is generally a good resource on these matters. 3. Why were there so many "Egerton Mill"? There is the one in Bolton, this one at Moses Gate and another at Salford. Are they related? 3. Hi Martin, And you have Egerton as a district of Bolton, Egerton Hall and Egerton Dye Works as well :-) The Egerton families owned Tatton Park in Cheshire and one later took the title of Viscount Salford. They were descended from the Duke of Bridgewater, so I guess they owned a lot of land and had considerable influence in Lancashire. This could be the reason for so many Egertons - Egerton village takes its name from the former landlord of the area, Sir Thomas Egerton.  It was developed in the 1830s when John and Edmund Ashworth (who resided in Egerton Hall) set up their cotton mills. They were the proprietors of ..... Egerton Mill(s). So yes, I guess there is a connection! If my Phethean mill history is similar, then the first mills were established round the periphery of central Bolton very early in the 19thC - and they then ran out of space as the machinery got bigger and demand went up. Probably they got the equivalent of Business Development grants to re-locate - and Moses Gate comprised just one mill surrounded by green fields in 1850. I have yet to find the exact location of John Phethean & Co's original mill in Bolton, but there is (to this day) a Phethean Street in Bolton between Bury Old Road and Bury New Road which appears (with no name) as early as the 1824 map of Bolton so the mill must have been located around there. There are plenty of likely candidates on the old OS maps but alas, no names once again. It must have been demolished or subsumed into another company's estate as there are no records in Williams and Farnie. By 1891 the mill had moved to Moses Gate and between 1893 and 1909 another Phethean Street had been constructed.
