ROWLAND/ROLAND SHUTTLEWORTH (Reg Bolton 1888) and ELIZABETH ANN LIVESEY (Reg Bolton 1890) were both working in cotton mills up to 1911. They emigrated to Canada and settled in Montreal between 1912-1913. This week I have been tracing back through the UK censuses and going through passenger lists to get them where I thought they should be in Canada. I have an anomaly with the birth of their children in Canada. I believe there was THOMAS SHUTTLEWORTH(1909 Bolton), JANE SHUTTLEWORTH (1912 Bolton) and WILLIAM SHUTTLEWORTH (1916 Montreal 1916). In the same year (and within 2 months) as William's birth there was child ANNIE HOLLAND (1916 Montreal) born to CHARLES WILLIAM HOLLAND and ELIZABETH ANN LIVESEY wife of ROLAND SHUTTLEWORTH I can understand two fathers but not the same mother giving birth to two children in the space of two months. It is not possible. I am struggling to explain this or to clarify with evidence (I have baptisms for both) what really happened. If you have any suggestions or you have these people in your family please could you contact me to share information. Regards Sue Cumbria
On the public member trees of ancestry.co.uk there is a Sutcliffe Carr family tree that has a Rowland/Roland Shuttleworth son of Thomas Shuttleworth & Emily Burrough born ca 1888. He is marked as arriving at Niagara Falls in 1913 also serving in WW1. If you think this is your Roland it might be worth contacting the tree owner who may have information [might be you of course!]. Thank you Jean, It doesn't sound quite right as I have his parents as Thomas and Alice but I shall go back through censuses and check this out and then make contact. Certainly has a lot of similarities. Hi Sue I think I have worked out the discrepancies between wives of Thomas Shuttleworth father of Rowland. It looks as though he married Emily Bullough and she was the mother of Rowland, she died in 1888 and he married Alice Asquith in 1889 and she is therefore shown with Thomas in 1891 and 1901. 1874 Thomas Shuttleworth married Emily Bullough at Leigh Register Office or Registrar Attended Census 1881 - RG11 3838 Folio 133 37 Cam St, Little Bolton Thomas Shuttleworth, aged 30, Joiner, born Kenyon Emily Shuttleworth, wife, aged 26, born Atherton Herbert Ed Shuttleworth, son, aged 4, born Halliwell Edith H Shuttleworth, daughter, aged 2, born Halliwell Baptisms: 28 Mar 1888 St Matthew, Bolton, Lancashire, England Rowland Shuttleworth - Son of Thomas Shuttleworth & Emily Abode: 103 Mere Hall St. Occupation: Joiner Baptised by: Geo. Best wishes Charlotte
Thank you Charlotte, lots of very helpful information. Yes I came to the same conclusion about Thomas and being a visitor with the Sharples in 1911, no explanation as yet. I did wonder if Elizabeth was expecting another child by that time but I can only find daughter Jane in MarchQ 1913 (FreeBMD).
