I would invite my husband's great-grandfather Hugh Duffy McBURNIE and his "de-facto" wife Mary Jane REA (no marriage ever found) to ask him about a few of the stories that have been passed down through the generations. Were they ever married? Did he really flee from Ireland to Liverpool in the 1870's and change his name to escape capture? His "wife" Mary Jane was in Walton Jail, Liverpool, in 1881 with their two-month old son Charles - just what crime had she committed? And what made them move to Halliwell from Liverpool?
