On the census for 1851 the place of birth for my gt,gt,gt grandfather (baptised st Peters 1897 place of residance Turton) is shown as reat Bolton N K. could anyone explain N K ? Keith Hurst

"NK" is usually "Not Known". Was he in the Bolton area in 1851, if somewhere else then perhaps they were not sure of the county. I once came across a page in rural Yorkshire with several families of itinerant workers living in tents - Irish tinkers? They all had just about every field entered as "NK".
