"NK" is usually "Not Known". Was he in the Bolton area in 1851, if somewhere else then perhaps they were not sure of the county. I once came across a page in rural Yorkshire with several families of itinerant workers living in tents - Irish tinkers? They all had just about every field entered as "NK".
