    1. [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Re; HUTCHINSON/FLETCHER/MASON families in Deane and Tonge with Haulgh

    3. Hello List, I was wondering whether anyone could help. I have a Hannah HUTCHINSON b.1814 Tonge with Haulgh with I believe some connection to the FLETCHER/MASON families. Hannah married John CROOK b.1813 Tonge with Haulgh, in Deane in 1834; in 1851 census, John is the Manager of a Paper Mill in Turton. In 1861 census, he is a Cotton Waste Dealer. From my research, it seems that the FLETCHER family was involved in the paper industry. I think that Hannah's mother's maiden name may have been FLETCHER. Indeed in 1841 census, there is an Edmond HUTCHINSON with his family in Lever St., with two members of a FLETCHER family. At this stage, I do not know whether this Edmond is a relative. Was the maiden name of John CROOK's mother MASON? The reason I ask, Hannah and John's grandchildren, 4 boys were all given a family name as their second name; Joseph Hamilton, Charles MASON, Thomas Mewburn and Francis FLETCHER. I know where the names Hamilton and Mewburn come from(maiden name of childrens' mother and maternal grandmother). Hence I suspect that MASON and FLETCHER are maiden names of their paternal grandparents, but I am unable to clarify this. Thanks Katharine
