    3. Hi Allan, I have just heard from a contact in Breightmet that the developers have withdrawn the planning application relating to the Old H&H and they will be re-submitting another one for just the housing behind it. Not sure what the fate of the pub is now - it has been vacant for some time and is in a bit of a state. Lets hope that the campaign to save it results in listed-building status or at the very least that someone is prepared to take it on and make a go of it. 3. I have fond memories of "The Hare & Hounds". As a schoolboy I sometimes got off the Breightmet bus there, thereby saving the odd penny or two which I immediately spent (and then some) up the steps at the corner sweet shop just across the road. They must have been magic sweets because by the time I had walked the extra mile or so home they had all disappeared. Later on when I was "courting" I often missed the last Breightmet bus home (I'm sure she made me do that on purpose just to excersise her control over me). Sometimes I was lucky enough to be able to run round from the terminus in Gt Moor St and catch the slightly later No. 9 Ainsworth bus either on Bradshawgate or in Bridgeman Place. I would then jump off that bus at the "The Hare & Hounds" as it turned the corner of Bury Rd & Stephens St. I was always thankful to arrive there and to have saved a mile and a half or so off my walk home - especially on a cold and wet winter evening. I must say that, having seen the "The Hare & Hounds" in Google Street View it looks far better there than the last time I saw it in the 1960s. Allan Halstead

    1. Re: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Egerton Mill, Moses Gate
    2. Stuart Phethean
    3. Hi Martin, And you have Egerton as a district of Bolton, Egerton Hall and Egerton Dye Works as well :-) The Egerton families owned Tatton Park in Cheshire and one later took the title of Viscount Salford. They were descended from the Duke of Bridgewater, so I guess they owned a lot of land and had considerable influence in Lancashire. This could be the reason for so many Egertons - Egerton village takes its name from the former landlord of the area, Sir Thomas Egerton.  It was developed in the 1830s when John and Edmund Ashworth (who resided in Egerton Hall) set up their cotton mills. They were the proprietors of ..... Egerton Mill(s). So yes, I guess there is a connection! If my Phethean mill history is similar, then the first mills were established round the periphery of central Bolton very early in the 19thC - and they then ran out of space as the machinery got bigger and demand went up. Probably they got the equivalent of Business Development grants to re-locate - and Moses Gate comprised just one mill surrounded by green fields in 1850. I have yet to find the exact location of John Phethean & Co's original mill in Bolton, but there is (to this day) a Phethean Street in Bolton between Bury Old Road and Bury New Road which appears (with no name) as early as the 1824 map of Bolton so the mill must have been located around there. There are plenty of likely candidates on the old OS maps but alas, no names once again. It must have been demolished or subsumed into another company's estate as there are no records in Williams and Farnie. By 1891 the mill had moved to Moses Gate and between 1893 and 1909 another Phethean Street had been constructed. 2. Stuart Phethean
    3. Hi, Seeking someone with local historical knowledge of the cotton mills in Farnworth. Does anyone know the history of Egerton Mill at Moses Gate? I know that in 1891 it was occupied by Philp & Thomas Bateman It seems to have been rebuilt on a slightly different site some time between 1893 and 1909 according to various Ordnance Survey maps, as by 1909, Phethean Street and Thorne Street now occupy the place on the earlier maps where most of the mill was depicted. I have some current anecdotal evidence that at some time after 1891 Egerton Mill became part of John Phethean & Co Ltd, who were of course the next mill in Cawdor Street at what became known as ³Cawdor Mill². I¹m having trouble proving this though. BTW, I have tried Williams & Farnie ³Cotton Mills in Greater Manchester² which is generally a good resource on these matters. 3. Not being familiar with Manchester Cathedral would SKS help me out? I am looking about the marriage of John Collings and Anne Hampson Dec. 14, 1821. I think they were not of the area and I think it was less expensive to get married there than somewhere else. Did you have to be a member of the Cathedral to get married there, or could you come from somewhere else, and establish a residence of 6 weeks while the banns were read? In other words did you have to live in Mancheser 6 weeks before the wedding? John and Anne moved to Radcliffe but when he died or was buried Dec27th, 1835 at St. Thomas Church, Radclife age 35. In 1836 St Thomas sent settlement papers to Cheatham. Can someone explain this situation to me. Thank You Donna Collinge Martens, Muskegon,Mi. DJMFLAG@aol.com
