I've been given a copy of a photo of this motley crew with a view to trying to decide whether someone could be in it. It's only 380k so it may not be of good enough quality to upload. I would guess that it dates from the mid to late 1930's. Does anyone know what the age range would have been for Girl Guides around this period? Regards, Allan Halstead

Thank you Maxine & Stuart for your responses. The main thing that appeals to me about the Branches genealogy software is that it shows your whole tree in one window. You can easily zoom in to / out from any item - including photos & documents - just as you would on Google Earth. Also you can search by name, &/or by place, &/or by a word within the notes - so for example you could find every Mary who is connected to Bolton who was a spinner. Look here to see what I mean: www.branchesgenealogy.com/features www.branchesgenealogy.com/tutorials There has to be a downside at this price ($14.95, abt £9) and it's that, according to one review, its GEDCOM file creation is "imprecise" and it isn't big on charts & reports. Stuart's advice seems sound so I'll probably go down that route. To answer Maxine's query about FTM2011 - the pedigree/descendant charts seem to be about the same width. However, for anyone who doesn't have a current Ancestry subscription, upgrading to FTM2011 Platinum seems to be a good deal at the moment - you can get the software and a 6-month Ancestry subscription for £30 if you shop around. Regards, Allan
All family tree software will export a GEDCOM file. Why not just define one program as the "master" and ALWAYS do all updates on that. Periodically export the whole database as a GEDCOM and import it into the second program. I do this on my MAC using Reunion 9 as the master and MacFamilyTree as the second as some of the reports are slightly different. So long as I know that Reunion is the definitive data source then I can do what I like with the data in MacFamilyTree as I know I can easily rebuild it in seconds by just importing a new GEDCOM from Reunion. I used to do this on a PC too, using PAF as my master and an old version of FTM for doing the odd report that PAF could not do. Guess it is no hassle if you are organized and never forget to enter everything both places...but it makes me crazy. Also, a question to you....does the FTM 2011 make better pedigree charts than the old program...? When I make a descendant chart on the one I have I need to tape it together and it is so wide, it is almost useless...It is several years old and I just wondered if they've improved that. Sorry to the list for being off topic. Sorry for this being off the Bolton topic but I'd rather ask people that I trust..... After reading Dick Eastman's EOGN genealogy blog about the Branches genealogy software I've been watching the tutorials and it looks like fantastic value for money at about £9 for a graphical family tree representation. I currently use Family Tree Maker 2011 Platinum. Would it be too much hassle to try to keep two databases in step? Does anyone in their right mind do that? Allan Halstead.

Hi Janet, Thanks for that... that was super quick! :) Managed to find it on ancestry now with the 2223 number and shortening the name to Robt (I should of done that before) The image on ancestry is a little fire damaged as you say, but only the top right quarter of the page so not much info is lost if any. All there for the WOODS :) Many thanks! Hi List, I'm looking for the following family in the 1851 census. In 1861 they have been transcribed as "WOODS" (both their dad's are living with them in 1861, I have Joseph WOOD in 1851 with his wife, I have no other details for Richard BOOTH so on the off chance he is with them in 1851 I include him too) Robert WOOD b1822 Little Bolton Margaret WOOD b1825 Eccles Elizabeth Booth WOOD b1845 Little Bolton .. Richard BOOTH b1783 Prestwich Any help would be much appreciated thanks. I am guessing/hoping it is an ancestry.com miss transcription brick wall! Jeremy
