Donna, LAN-OPC has transcribed a large amount of information from the registers of St Michael, Great Lever, including burials 1851-1936. [1]http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Bolton-le-Moors/Great-Lever/stmichael/index.htm l Sadly I'd guess that your chances of getting the church involved in buying an airmail reply stamp to write to you are probably no good, and their interest in setting about having a headstone re-erected pending the next vandal attack will be nil, unless you manifest as an significant overseas benefactor. Generally such churches are having a fairly difficult time and most of them probably think they are doing quite well if they manage to prevent the lead being stolen from their roofs. The felons attacking one local church, surrounded by housing on all sides, actually went even further and made off with the bell from its tower a few days ago. Perhaps we shouldn't be too surprised if they are less obsessed with their graveyards than we are. Hi List, In 2003 Valerie gave me some information about the Austin and Draper relationship but it was not concluded. The marriage took place between Joseph Austin and Sarah Draper on 23.12.1829 at St Mary's Deane. Sometime between 1829 and when Joseph remarried Martha Wollescroft 24.7.1837 in Farnworth, Sarah died. I am seeking this death information. Joseph died June 1845 and is buried in St Peters, Bolton. Please can anyone help. John
Just watching this programme on BBC4, it is repeated later tonight and sure it will be on again. The section on Bolton was about tripe, UCP etc. TRAVEL: The North on a Plate On: BBC 4 (Freeview) Date: Friday 15th July 2011 (starting in 4 hours and 9 minutes) Time: 01:45 to 02:45 (1 hour long) Paris-based cultural historian Andrew Hussey follows his success with France on a Plate by travelling back to his homeland, the north west of England, in search of its lost food culture. He brings with him the French idea of terroir - a belief that a food from a particular area is rendered unique though a particular set of local circumstances including culture and landscape. Andrew asks if this highbrow foodie term can be applied to common northern grub such as a Blackpool chip or a Wigan pie.
