RIMMER REUNION Once again The Rimmer Family History Society will be hosting this popular, and we believe unique, event at the Fleetwood Hesketh Social Club, Fylde Road, Marshside, Southport, PR9 9XH on Sunday 9th October 2011 from 12noon until 5.30pm. The speaker (at 1.15pm) will be Professor Stephen Harding of Nottingham University, a man who was leading the project which involved taking DNA from many West Lancashire/Wirral men to ascertain if they were of Viking origin. The Rimmer Family History Society firmly believe their surname is, indeed, of Scandinavian origin and are looking forward to what Professor Harding has to say. As well as listening to a very knowledgeable speaker there will be much Rimmerabelia to peruse, internet access for research and refreshments/bar will be available. If you have any Rimmer heritage please bring a family tree with you to display on the boards - you never know, you might meet up with family you didn’t know you had - it has happened at every Reunion is 2002! This is a free event and you don’t have to be a Rimmer to attend (although it helps to be part of the ‘madding crowd’) - anyone with an interest in our surname will be made very welcome. For further information please contact the Chairman of The Rimmer FHS, Gladys Rimmer Armstrong on (01704) 214120, Mob: 079 666 25359 or e-mail chairman@rfhs.co.uk
The Bolton Branch of the Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society will have its next meeting Wednesday October 5th at 7.30pm at the Bolton Cricket Club, Green Lane, Bolton BL3 2JB. The local historian Paul Cross will give a talk entitled "Cotton Comes to Lancashire" to show conditions in 19th C Lancashire cotton mills. He plans to discuss the relationship between the owners and workers, describe and demonstrate some of the 35 different kinds of jobs that they did, and the home life that they came from, with a view to helping members own research. I think tonight's programme had some film shot in Bolton. It will be on iPlayer and I think the series is going to be repeated overnight shortly. HISTORY DOCUMENTARY: Reel History of Britain On: BBC 2 Scotland (02) Date: Thursday 29th September 2011 (Already shown) Time: 18:30 to 19:00 (30 minutes long) Dawn of a New Era. Episode 19. Melvyn Bragg, accompanied by a vintage mobile cinema, travels across the country to show incredible footage preserved by the British Film Institute and other national and regional film archives, to tell the history of modern Britain. In Manchester, Melvyn looks back to the 1900s and the dawn of a new era, when the invention of the film camera put everyday people in the picture. Margaret Koppens talks about her grandfather who was one of the thousands of children who risked life and limb in the cotton mills of Lancashire. Fairground owner Peter Sedgwick comes face to face with his great grandfather who started the family business back in 1900. Plus, how a discovery of film stock in a Blackburn basement ended up a world treasure. Have ancestors from Oldham? You'll be interested in the info that Mary Pendlebury, Oldham & District Branch of the Manchester & Lancashire FHS, has asked to be distributed: The Oldham Branch of the Manchester & Lancashire FHS have just published a CD of early Oldham records, the result many years of work by Oldham-based volunteers. "The CD contains thousands of entries from 1681 to 1829. There are three one-year studies, for the years 1682, 1707 and 1733 respectively, which were compiled by two people who spent many hours drawing together information from many records in OLSA. The studies do not list EVERY person in the township although most families are mentioned. The 1829 item is a transcription of Dunn's Survey of Oldham which listed owners, occupiers and details of their properties. "Contents "A miscellaneous collection ranging from 1681 to 1829 (CDROM). The records on this CD give snapshots of the population of the Oldham area at various dates from the Restoration to the dawn of the Victorian era, Over a century and a half Oldham evolved from a village in the foothills of the Pennines in 1681 (the time of the first database) into a bustling town in 1829 (the time of the last database). The industrial revolution was about to turn the town into one of the most important centres of the cotton industry.
